Some Terrier work from the US ...coons !

Recommended Posts

A good friend of mine from up in Iowa had posted these pics and I thought I'd share them with you. Vargy's total take was 63 coons in 2 weeks using his patts, Fox terriers, and such. Pretty impressive numbers.post-41526-126333916237_thumb.jpgpost-41526-126333925275_thumb.jpg

DnN,

Typically their are 3 ways furbearers(coons, fox, bobcat, mink, muskrat, coyote and so on) are sold....

In the round- the whole carcas. Some buyers actually prefer them this way as it allows them to prepare the hide exactly how they want it.

'Green'- the animal is simply skinned and the hide is then placed in the freezer until sale date.

'Put up'- Involves some time. The hide is washed, fleshed ( placed on a beam and then the leather is scraped to remove all tissue) and then placed on a stretcher to dry . Once the leather is dried, you can ship it to say Canada for auction , as an example.A fur shed full of well-taken care of ,'put-up' fur should make any hunter proud. Quite a sense of accomplishment. Like I said, though, very time consuming.

Thanks aaron

They're a major agricultural pest and control is much needed. The farmers often don't even realize how many their barns hold in winter. Good animals, vocal and plentiful. Not meant to hijack your thread AP, just so the fellas abroad can see more photos of IA coon. I hope you don't mind. Goldfinch, they will damage a dog and are better than a fox.

What do them things weigh?

How do you mean better than a fox? they do more damage or less?

I think we need to import some to bulk out our quarry list :whistling:

They range in weight from 20-30 pounds typically. A few smaller, a few bigger. They will grab the terrier and ball up on them and will do more damage than a fox. Stronger and more weapons. Real interesting animals, very clever and adaptable.

i bet thats great fun, be like ratting but in a bigger way, lol,

a import would be fine !

They do more damage than a fox , because they're so dextrous they grab a hold of your dog with their claws, the average weight would be 15-20 LBS, I know around here where there's a lot of Maize grown the coons feed till their fit to burst and can get up to 30LBS + being a "blow in" to Canada i've worked lots of foxes back home in the UK , Coons are far nastier
