How is the trade in furs doing over there these days? Thanks for sharing! DnN DnN, The hides do not need to be tanned to be sold...just 'put-up', generally. I'll explain that if need be. The raw, wild fur market is like the US Dollar. In the crapper. But still, most of us still like the finished product of wild fur and will sell anyway. Maybe buy a pack of gum with the proceeds. Aaron Proffitt 142
I tell ya ,pals, well... next month I deploy to the Horn of Africa for 15 months. As such, I sold off all of my fast dogs as it would just be too much for my wife and daughter to care for.And they need to be hunted. My wife loves to hunt coyotes with our fast dogs, but she just won't have the time by herself. I was thinking about what I was going to put in my kennels when I return and between what I have learned as Vargy's protege of sorts and from you guys here...I'm already contacting Patterdale breeders for when I return. I think I've been missing out using Patts as a very viable coon dog. ATB, Aaron PS..thanks for all the feedback, mates. I thought you guys would appreciate this. DnN, Typically their are 3 ways furbearers(coons, fox, bobcat, mink, muskrat, coyote and so on) are sold.... In the round- the whole carcas. Some buyers actually prefer them this way as it allows them to prepare the hide exactly how they want it. 'Green'- the animal is simply skinned and the hide is then placed in the freezer until sale date. 'Put up'- Involves some time. The hide is washed, fleshed ( placed on a beam and then the leather is scraped to remove all tissue) and then placed on a stretcher to dry . Once the leather is dried, you can ship it to say Canada for auction , as an example.A fur shed full of well-taken care of ,'put-up' fur should make any hunter proud. Quite a sense of accomplishment. Like I said, though, very time consuming. Quote Link to post
