Jack Dark 2
That funny, just this afternoon I was thinking the same thing, my pup is now 6 ½ months old and I can’t imagine (though sorely tempted sometimes) taking him out yet, he is after all still a puppy and a sometimes silly one at that. I think it best to wait until the dog is grown up both physically and mentally before taking it out later rather than earlier. Someone once said that it takes a year to give a dog basic training and then a year experience before you get the best out of it; I think that that’s about right. Quote Link to post
watchman 256
your bang on lads so not just me then,i will admit bringing a dog on can be a long wait but in my eyes worth it in the end,my pet hate is a young, inexperienced dog giving tongue on quarry, and as said can get picky on what they want to run,im no experienced DOG man,but i have never had a yapper nor a dog that wont run on anything i point it at,and give 100% it seems favourite usually to ask a bull x owner has it done much, but the question does come up with other xs as well Quote Link to post
Wallop 2
Ok then fellas maybe you can help me out. I have a 6 month old Beddy / whippet.... Now I got her for a day time rabbit dog and to be honest not really looking to use her on the lamp. This is my first Lurcher and you hear so much about messing a pup up by entering it early... I have taken her out and let her catch the scent around the warrens during the day but made no effort to do any real mooching. The other day I went out as it was getting dark. I took her to a place where I know there isn't anything about (or so I thought) She chased up a rabbit and didn't get it. She didn't open up and I'm walking her on the lead later in the day to avoid this happening again. I don't want to mess her up .... what age do you think I should let her off to mooch about? any advise / help much appriciated Quote Link to post

I started my 3/4 hound 1/4 collie at 14 mths as I felt he took a long time to mature. However once I did start him, he came on in leaps and bounds with his obedience where prior to this he was very iffy. Almost as tho the hunt instinct kicking in brought it all together . . . . . he was fulfilling his role in life. I am told the smaller breeds ie whippet , bedlington x's can start earlier but I have no experince with this x. All in al I think you will know when to start him - when his recall, and obedience is spot on. Good luck. Quote Link to post

collie/grey 238
There is a difference between mooching about, walking with a pup and it haveing a run or two on a bunny that pops up in front of it to actually taking the said pup out intentionally running it on a rabbit or two. I personally wait till about 12 months old to take it out on the lamp, to late is far better than to early. Casually mooching about with a pup will do it no harm, it's the intentionally running the pup on quarry at a young age that ruins them. Quote Link to post

Yes i would say so, that is quite natural and shows she is maturing, a big deerhound/greyhound pup of the same age wouldn't be doing things like that as they would still be really immature. Just my opinion though. Quote Link to post

Atb Mr Jones around a year old,i only ever have bitches so imo can start them off that bit younger, this will also vary on the dog, type of cross, and what i see in it,a dog of around 6 7 or even 8 months old imo does not have the strenth of mind stamina ect for a nights lamping, dont forget only my opinion Quote Link to post
