ROZ 0 Posted September 28, 2006 Report Share Posted September 28, 2006 (edited) you cant send animals for slaughter if you have pumped them full of crap thats why there are vets and meat inspectors at abbotoirs thats what they call traceabillity Getting stuff from Abbatiors is getting harder I needed a end of user licence I was informed from my local abbatatior. On said they don't bone on the premises & only had marrow bones The other just tipped a box of stuff, seemed to be mainly ribs, into a bin bag for nothing. Must be a good few kilos there - will feed my dog for a while, going to have a sort through it - not a problem when you get it for "f**k all" as he put it . Bought a couple of hearts for 70p also. Going to try some other Butchers before next week; this seems too easy Quote Link to post

As for being a sales rep or having other vested interests, I am not and I haven't. I thought I was putting my point across. I guess the rabble don't like being called romantics. If you read my posts you will see the one that mentions having fed raw food in the past. It didn't have a name then, it was just dog food!! Sorry I took you the wrong way, just you seemed quite anti raw feeding (whatever its name) for someone who used to feed it No worries mate, stay and have another pint! Roz, there you are matey! Been looking for you - I couldn't find your PM to reply to you about end user licences. After our discussion over PM about them, I contacted DEFRA and Trading Standards (who enforce animal byproducts legislation in their particular area of the UK). I have had written confirmation from both that you definitely DO NOT need an end user licence to buy from an abattoir or butcher, if you are not a business yourself. Fair play that particular abattoir wouldn't sell without one, that can't be helped. Might be worth reminding them or others like them in future though Cheers. Quote Link to post

I'd not be asking for anything specific at first - just tell them you want to buy some scran for the dogs and ask what they can offer you. You'll probably get something like "What like marrow bones and stuff?" in reply. That's your chance to jump in and say "No thanks mate - got any pigs trotters, pig/cow heads, tails, lamb necks, and that sort of stuff?" You'll possibly get a strange look or two, but then depending on the slaughter house (the one near us sells dog mince anyway so they're well used to it all) you'll be given a few boxes of necks/trotters and some heads if you require them. Heads are great tucka for larger dogs, and even smaller dogs get a geat workout from them. See how you get on. It's great seeing all the lads on here taking an interest and switching over to raw EDITED TO ADD: If you can get a box of chicken backs, necks or even whole carcases or frames so much the better. Wholesale meat suppliers/abattoirs specialising in poultry are good for these. Again just take what you can get so long as it's got good bone content AND is meaty. king 11,972 Posted September 30, 2006 Report Share Posted September 30, 2006 well went to the abbatoir and its a very big place but the security guard was a bit of a prick to say the least so i didn't have much luck there the other 2 are a good distance from me it was my mistake i thought they were a lot closer .but never mind i went down the local butchers and the wife bought a big lump of beef for a stew.so i had a word with him and sorted out every friday i could go down and get a bit of him.he gave me a big box a few livers and a few hearts a good few racks of rib some nice rmbs and about 4lb of sausage the dog's loved the rack's so i think i will try to sort out if i can go down on a tuesday and a friday to pick some stuff up.he is 3 mins walk down the lane Quote Link to post

Might be worth a phone call or letter to the gaffer (not just any old worker) explaining who you are and what you want. Don't give up on good sources easily! BTW - free sausages? Sod the dogs... spike 0 Posted September 30, 2006 Report Share Posted September 30, 2006 (edited) I widened the net a bit this morning, tried a few butchers (in Ormskirk/Aughton, Lee - I take it you know the area?) some mixed results as expected, but one chopped some good lamb necks off there & then & said he will get & keep "plucks" etc for me, another gave me loads including liver, meat,ribs etc & said he will keep his stuff back for me - freeze it until I come next week as he bones at different times. Also found a meat wholesaler which was shut, but I'll try next week. Reckon I've now gor a month's food in the freezer & more in fridge for nothing except the cost of a bit of mince/sausages for us - less than £5.
