Dog Insurance

Recommended Posts

Get insurance that pays out per condition per year, not per lifetime in case your dog develops a chronic problem. Ask around your friends who have insurance and have made claims to find out how quickly their insurance paid out. I use Petplan, not the cheapest but I know they pay out quickly and are fair (for an insurance company!). Consider whether you'd also like cover for reward money if your dog is stolen, and how much third party insurance you want (in case your dog causes a car to crash etc). You will usually find that your dog will need to be vaccinated and wormed regularly, also to have a yearly health and dental check to get full cover.

Would be interesting to know roughly how much it costs to insure a lurcher.

i think the younger the dog is the cheaper

i think i was £6.50,,a month,,,think it as went u to £7.50,,that was over 4 years

make sure ur got accidental cover,,noticed years ago some didnt,,uless u payed more

most companys pretty much cover the same,,,,,dog stolen/ broken bones/ illness,,,reward money e,t,c

try compared. com web site,,,u might get a deal on there,,,,read small print make sure ur covered for what u want

I used to insure my springer bitch, but i got stung. The things they dont pay out for is numerous, and minor things makes it not worthwhile claiming with a 50 quid excess.

My springer got bartonellas disease of a tick, and left me with a £1000 vet bill that i had to pay out.

I now have a tin that i put £20 month in to pay for an emergency vet bill, its surprising how the money mounts up and the money is still yours if nothing goes wrong.

I would reccomend this method to anyone.

Cheers FTB

Just got a Lurcher pup and am looking to get her insured, any advise would be appreciated. Thanks

It's all a bit of a gamble. Over an 8 year period not too long ago I had 2 dogs insured. Both about £100 a year. One has had no claims and the other had £1100 back from the insurance. Could have saved 500 if I hadn't bothered. I don't bother now. Save the money in your own bank. Cheers D.

Costs me £19 a month with Petplan, was £16 a month last year when she was a pup. Like I say they aren't the cheapest but sometimes you get what you pay for. You can get a six weeks free form from most vets and bigget pet shops. It's a lot, but not compared with the £80 a month bank loan I am paying to pay for my last dog's vet's bills! It's fine to put the money away instead, but if you're like me you will dip into it to pay a bill etc and find when you need it it's gone. Also some bills can run up into the thousands very quickly.

when it comes to insurance,,,,,,i think its hit or miss

i know a dog that died on vet,s table,,,,vet bill was £700,,,,stinger if u had to pay that for a dead dogs treatment ,,

the guy got £500 ,,,cos dog died i,e was able to go buy another,,,,not his choice at end off the day,,,but it was peace off mind

(not saying too much on here,,,but if ur vet ok,,,he will add excese on to bill so u dont have to pay a penny )

but its all down to what happen,,,,ive got 2 out off my 3 insured,,,and 1 off them has not needed work,,1 has

( i think its down to peace off mind,,,,if ur dog,s got a forever home,, u make sure u can provide the best treament,,,some cases if dogs not injured it might mean ur alittle out off pocket,,

but if pll,s on here say they work there dog,s nearly every day in hunting season it might be worth while,,,even if their dogs are only insured at winter,,,,,CAUSE THEY VET BILL,S CAN BE HUGE,,, ,,,,

ok I have used 'more than' and it was an apt name what they wouldnt pay for was 'more than' what they would plus you had to be with them 6 wks first, changed to Pet Plan and altho slightly dearer they have been spot on, even down to rang when we lost a terrier offering a reward and flyers etc, had a lurcher have an RTA and they paid the vet within 7days of his invoice, the equivilant of 11yrs 4 months worth of payments

That is one of the reasons I went with Petplan, they are known to be good payers and most vets have a good working relationship with them, and will have the Petplan forms ready to hand as soon as you go in with the dog so they can help you fill it in rather than you go home, ring the ins company, wait for the form to come in the post, etc etc.
