advice on new ground - how to manage all pests inc deer

Recommended Posts

Hello to one and all i hope your all having fun in the snow!

so i am fairly new to stalking i have recently completed my dsc LV1 i have shot few deer etc and been shooting .22lr and 12G for a long time. HOWEVER - i have recently picked up some ground and the farmer wants all pests managed including the deer population. the deer are travelling right through his ground wrecking hedges and winter crops etc so he wants them to be controlled...no prolem with that, but he also wants the foxes rabbits corvids and pigeon controlled as well. Whilst drving around we saw fox tracks everywhere, then we saw 2 foxes playing in the snow at 9.30am so there is clealy a few around.

So my question is this: I am worried that lamping the foxes and rabbits will upset / push on the deer?????? surely i dont want to be letting off shots if i see the deer when out foxing? get me?

if i was to ferret the ground to sort out the rabbits would it be best to use nets? i usually put the ferrets in and then have a few guns around to shoot as they bolt....guessing this isnt such a good idea with all the noise it creates?

OR am i worrying about nothing ?

ps: does anyone on here use salt licks for deer? and if so can they give me any info about what the best way to use them? i heard they need to be put near water?

cheers.

The foxes at this time of year are well in to mating and will be establishing territories rabbits if in any number at all must be controlled by all methods. If i had got ground of a farmer and he wanted the vermin controlled and a few deer shot i would make sure that i done the job .I Certainly would not worry about a few deer moving away for a few weeks. So my advice to you is get off the net and get on the ground remove everything that has been requested because if you don't there will be lads that will and they will pay for it also.

where i shoot deer on a freinds ground there is also a large pheasant shoot thay shoot twice a week and the keepers also lamp vermin regular and this doesnt seem to bother the deer at all so if i was you i wouldent worry about shooting just crack on with it

As others have said, get on and do something to show the farmer you are serious. I have shot many hundreds of rabbits bolting them to the shotty and this does not seem to bother any unbolted ones still underground regarding noise above. This gives you the ability to move from 1 warren to another pretty quickly.

Regarding lamping and scaring deer at night, this is not a bad thing as any deer moving away at the sound of a shot helps to protect them from drive by lampers or can at least help.

Spent as much time as you can on the ground finding out where the deer are moving and feeding, this will make it easier to get into them. You can then put highseats in these areas creating safe shots.

the bigger problem would be putting deer up out of their daytime lie ups, they will get used to lamping and shots( i spent some time in sennelager,a big range.deer and pigs would wait untill dinner time and come out to graze :whistling: ).

leave the deer alone unless you want to shoot them( put the salt/mineral stones in the daytime holds.high enough that they cant lick directly but water running down the stump/post will carry salt into the wood).

when going about the vermin controll you will find out where the deer are moving to and from, try to shoot them on thier way.i don't agree with shooting at set up feeds, salt stones etc( imho they are there to better the enviroment for the deer).

keep us posted on how you get on bud

Sorry mate if i sounded to harsh but what i was trying to say was really dose it matter if you upset the Deer. You post said that the farmer wanted them controlled so if you get the chance to up set the deer all the better just make sure you fill your freezer. You can leave the deer managment and stalking once the farmer is happy with the deer levels.

it may sound a bit daft but the deer cannot take on food( digestive system slows down, they can eat but not store or use very much food)therefore we should see it as our responsibility to only stress/disturb them when we must.

not wanting to be pedantic but the deer should be controlled and not harrassed/starved to death.

i'm not sure which species you have there or in what concentration, disturbance will be unavoidable when controlling pest/vermin but should be kept to a min.

not being funny just trying to get my point accross bud,

however you do it have fun and i would be interested how you get on.

Congratulations on the new permission mate, sounds like your going to be having some fun! as has been said already, we've never found the Deer overly disturbed by gun fire and certainly not by the lamp, they tend to just stand and stare at it not deeming it as a threat.

A lot of the land I go on is keepered and shot every week, also with trusted lads that the keeper lets out after pests. Most nights out we'll see deer on the Lamp, so if they were going to move on they would of done it by now. I

Any Idea when your down my way next? Fingers crossed but I might of sorted some permission that you could help me on, I've definately got the rabbits/pigeons etc but their's Roe 'a plenty' and he hasn't mentioned anyone else having permission. I'll have a word tomorrow and see what he says.

All the Best.

Ok so i have been for my first stalk this morning just to see what the score is, i went with a friend and having a bit of a mooch we came across some slots that were sort of like deer but bigger. loads of fox tracks in the soft mud etc.

we stalked all of the ground but we didn't see anything but a lot of slots all over the places and some very work rides as well, my mate nearly had a heart attack when i told him to peer over one of the hedges and he saw about 40 red hinds - shame they were the other side of the boundary in the confines of the venison farm fence! hahahaha but none the less this is were they are coming from.

so here is another question: the farmer thinks they are coming from the wood now that they have escaped from the farm......but i couldn't find any slots coming in or out of the wood. is it possible they are jumping the fence as it cant be much over 2 meters and then returning to the farm as and when they please?

anyway we were on the way to the car i saw an odd white shape across the field - i didn't really know what i was looking at at first, but whatever it was it had just spotted me and was staring intently. when i raised the bino's shakily ( my heart ws pumping) it was a fecking llama! and there was another one as well and it had the same colour coat a red deer!!!! glad we didn't make a mistake in low light!

turns out that the lady near by has llama and one has escaped ...hence the strage slots! so i told the farmer he is happy and pleased i have have made a start. going lamping next week to try and see if we can meet up with charlie and bugs.

ps: Can you eat llama????
