I have just bought a 20lb box of frozen chicken/tripe mince to start weaning my 14 week old colliexwhippet. At the moment I am adding a small amount to its complete puppy food and gradually increasing it. When my dog is fully grown, roughly how much of this stuff should it be eating per day, I have been told approx 1 lb but that doesn't seem much to me? Also, would you still give a small amount of dry complete with it for more balance or convert completely to the raw?

I personally feed completely raw, however know lots that feed a bit of both without problem and their dogs look great on it. I would say if you decide to feed raw then the mince you have brought will not be enough of a balanced diet on its own. You would need to add some different meat, bones, fish, offal and veg if you choose to.

I have never gone into the weight of barf with my 3, i feed judging by eye and levels of exercise. It sounds scary to start with, but you will soon realise if your dog isn't getting enough food by her shape , you can increase the food or decrease if she starts looking heavy.

If your going down the raw route then it would be advisable to start approaching your local butchers and seeing if you can set up a deal with them for free bits and pieces. I would also recommend you keep your eyes peeled for a second hand freezer that you can stick in the garage, just for dog food.

Its advisable to feed raw and dry food seperatly as they digest them at different rates.

On an average its thought 2% of the dogs body weight is a good medium, uping or downing from the eye depending on metabalism.

I have a bull greyhound that eats the same as my 100lb AB because he has a very fast meabalism, but 2% is a great medium on the whole.

What is the result to the dog if you feed dry food wit raw meet ?

It can give some dogs diarrhoea, but even if it doesn't the raw meat won't give as much goodness to the dog if itis mixed with dry as that goes through the gut faster which means the meat side of things won't have time to be absorbed as well. Some human nutritionists say that the same is true for humans and that we'd get more benefit from what we eat if we didn't mix up carbohydrate and protein in the same meal.

Thanks for the advice. I have been out and bought a freezer, box of chicken necks, box of chicken wings, box of heart chunks and box of chicken/tripe mince. I am giving my 16 week old collie whippet 3 chicken wings or necks in the morning, half a pound of chicken/tripe mince for lunch and half a pound of chicken/tripe mince around 6 oclock with a small heart chunk. Does this sound ok?
