200,00 construction workers unemployed

Recommended Posts

Nobodies mentioned the greedy, British agencies that flood the large construction sites with cheap, foreign labour. There have been a few very large projects here in Pembrokeshire in recent years, (LNG terminals, now new power station) and they have be inundated with Polish, Portuguese and the rest. These agencies only under cut the native firms slightly, but they pay the foreign workers just about bare minimum, and make around £10-£15 an hour off the back of every single one of them. Not bad going when you've got hundreds of workers on the books, if not thousands all over the country....

Not sure what the poles n that get paid from the agencies but as a brickie I always got £13-£15 per hour. At the minute, and for the last 3 months I have spent sat on the couch with no work. I called about a job the other day and the person I spoke to said I was about the 80th person to phone, he still wanted to see my cv and he asked what is the least amount of money I would work for, you can see where this job is going to, probably end up on minimum wage. As for benefits, I was refused as my partner earns more than £100 per week, which is a joke. Our shopping bill adds to that, as does the mortgage let-alone everything else. I can't understand how I have paid over £50000 in taxes over the last 10 years and I cannot claim £60 per week job seekers allowance. I would be better off selling my house and getting a council house and benefits. As to the foreigners, I don't think they have caused this work shortage, but they are certainly not helping by taking up some of the jobs. The blame lies with government as the should be realising this and putting a stop to it.

Ive said it earlier on this thread ill say it again, who do you blame for foreign workers taking your jobs?

Its the governments fault, not the immigrant workers or the Muslims flooding into this country or the agencies, they are exploiting the situation to the maximum, but they couldnt do it without Labour [the party of the working man] letting them come here.

The Tories are no fecking better, the real winners when labour is cheap are companies,ie Tory company shareholders/owners.

Just buy a big jar of vaseline grease your arse up and bend over who ever wins the next election, nothing ever really changes.

Mate, I couldn't agree more. I know boys who spent most of the 80's in Germany, then most of the 90's working over in Ireland, you cant blame a person for going to work abroad when there's no work at home. I wasn't pinning the blame squarely on the agencies as such, more the current situation that's allowing them to do what they do, I just didn't put it across like that! ;) I totally agree that it's the fault of our spineless government. I can see through your posts that I am in the same sort of position as you when it comes to politics, I could never bring myself to vote Conservative as a lifelong socialist, yet I'm as fed up with labour as the next man, so won't be voting for them either.

Youre probably right about our agreeing on polotics, not meant as a dig at you at all, just an observation on reality, and i was one of those who worked in Germany, nearly went to Ireland but managed.

People will get sick of the Tories after 10 yrs[inevitable they will win imo] and Labour will be back in again, complete bullshit.

Not forgetting when the Tories regain power Labour will be shouting the odds about what they would do making all sorts of promises they wouldnt keep and wont keep when they do have their next turn.

Why dont people realise whats happening?

yes it's sad,at the moment none of the three main parties offer anything for most of us,i can envisage a day soon when political parties will be numerous, but the younger generation will be the most powerful on earth if only they can recognise the opportunities,

They wouldn't be the 'main' parties if people didn't keep bloody voting for them. As a country we are getting more and more apathetic. People dont pay attention to politics and mostly you just hear the same old mantra...."Its does'nt matter who you vote for, they're all the same".

This was taken in between Carfin and Craigneuk

up here in Scotland. Steel like coal was a major industry for generations and jobs were practically guaranteed when you left school. Generations of families worked here. Here are some old pics of what used to be there
