200,00 construction workers unemployed

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone lets look at the facts from what actually occurs yes unemployment does occur in Winter due to the weather .Foreign labour is well used in the building industry to the detriment of local labour .With the downturn in the economy the building trade will suffer. House prices have risen ridiculously not many people can get on the property ladder.I have spoken to two site agents recently both have stopped building because no one can buy the houses and to keep things ticking over the houses are being rented out these are brand new houses and they both say they dont know when it will start up again .So obviously lads are out of work ,the government do not give a toss about the building trade even though they use it as a yardstick to guage economic growth.

Feelings are running high on these issues because we are all feeling the pressure, but this shouldnt turn into a race slanging match imo, because trust me that isnt the real cause of our problems.

The fact is were all being used whatever our race/religion,its mainly financial/political,muslims hardly affect the building trade at all,ive seen 2 in nearly 30 yrs on sites who were on the tools, they tend to swamp the unskilled labour market, the Eastern Europeans have made a big impact on it,but ive been to Germany working myself so dont want to sound hypocritical, although the situation there was very different and they needed us,we dont need more workers here because the work isnt there for our own people.

When the recession struck us hard, the first person we laid off was my lad,he's got 2 kids under 3 and a fairly big mortgage, because his missus was on maternity leave pay he couldnt get a penny not even milk tokens, the difference between the pay and mortgage was £200 a month before they paid any bills, hes never been out of work and paid tax for 8 years, yet people come here and get it on a plate, but the point is,who makes the rules? Its not the immigrants who cant even speak English is it,no its the Labour party the party of the working man, makes you think dont it.

Thanks Artic things have changed, that situation was a while ago, thankfully weve had some good luck and are better off than a lot of small companies i know, its not easy but at least were surviving the recession, even managed to take on a trainee recently.

People seem to be aiming their anger[understandable] in the wrong direction thats all, dont get me wrong im anti muslim extremist and pro British through and through [not racist] and think theirs far to many immigrants here recession or not,but who causes it or lets it happen?

I just hope people remember when it comes to an election, who to vote for is a different matter.

Came on here to talk dogs seemed to have got a bit sidetracked, but weve all got strong feelings on these issues i suppose.

Many of my family are in the building trade and have never seen it so bad. It makes me laugh when the government ries to tell us that we will be out of the recession in the spring! They have no grasp of reality, living in their subsidised westminster bubble! :icon_eek:

It is in times like this that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer....

Thank you guys for giving straight views. You are right that I don't know that much about the construction industry. I'm ready to listen to the people who are on the edge; I just don't trust loud mouth gits who know even less than I do.

For what it is worth I spent most of my working life in the knitwear industry. KFAT rep, stroppy shop steward, had the lads and lassies out a few times.

If the government had got the lazy b*****ds off benefits and that includes the 80% of the chancers on disability, then there would have been no need for imigrants to do the jobs when times were good.

Agreed mate being saying that for years,we all know a good few,one geezer i know been on it for 20yrs with depression, doesnt stop him going to the boozer day and night though? but same again who makes the rules? No offence to genuine people who are physically impaired thats what its for,as for most of the others maybe some work would improve their mental health, stop em feeling sorry for themselves.

Done this is making my head hurt.

i dont really know much about politics but this is whats happend to me and im sure many other young lads,

when i left school i was unsure about what to do next, my grades wernt that good as i pratted about tryen to look cool and impress the girls ect, i could of done better as im not stupid (just my opinion :D ) all my family and other elders told me to get a trade behind me if only to fall back on. so i went to college and done a N.V.Q in construction this helped me get my key skills up to scratch and gain knowladge and practical skills in different trades, after that i chose to study bricklaying as it was the trade i enjoyed most out of the five in the construction course. i went on to complete both F.C.A and I.C.A in bricklaying. to gain the N.V.Q 2 in brickwork you need to be on-site working and one day a week in the classroom. alot ov the placments i went on used me as a cheap labourer and i hardly ever got on the trowel. i payed for all my own tools, boots, ect out of the 30 quid a week i was getting payed. it seems that everytime i was just getting there i had a " sorry son im gunna have to let you go i cant afford to keep you on"

im now 21 years old unemployed and still without my N.V.Q 2 and its not like i havent tried, some off my mates at college where more lucky than me and got good placements and the N.V.Q 2 but are now out of work, as employers can be choosey as there are alot of tradesmen out of work and will oftan pick the older more expereianced, im even having trouble getting labouring jobs or any job for that matter

i am not workshy or lazy on my days off college i was a window cleaner and have worked for local block paving companies that seem to like young lads for cheap cash in hand labour. last year was the worst for me workwise but im hoping this year will be better

im not trying to make anyone feel sorry for me or anything i just thought id share my first hand experience in trying to get into the construction industry

Good luck with your future endevors mate. If you'r having to sign on now you might as well get back to college while there aren't any jobs about. Looks better on you CV than been unemployed.

I know a few guys who started re-training to be plumbers a few years back, remember when it was the next big thing? On of them struggled like mad to find someone to do his training with as they were all too busy. Think he's still a postman and wasted all that money.

Pleenty of people try hard it's not allways their fault.
