ferretess 230
Mate, you don't need a huge, lumbering, hulking thing. A good, healthily bred GSD is as much of a deterrent IMO. As intimated........ Very loving and loyal, from six months she's known her job, and takes it very seriously. No training required, just a lot of loving, respect and 2 square meals a day.. I dare you...no....I DOUBLE dare you. Matty she still looks cute and see she rules the roost she has the couch where are you ? Any dog can be a guard dogs all got the same teeth and different temperaments never had any problems after we put kennels in the garden and it was russells that were in them,

nod 285
The only time i was intimidated when i was working for the councils dog warden side was when i was told to go and picked up a 'BIG DOG' when i got at the address the people who found it in there garden were pointed for me to go through the gate, i peered over the gate and it was the biggest american bull dog i have ever seen, i walked in and it stopped stood broad side looking straight at me then charged with its tounge hanging from its mouth, my arse went that tight i couldn't even fart let alone shit myself, i quickly turned and went for the gate but fumbled the latch, it jumped on my back and started to lick my ears, i turned and looked at it and told it to get down, and to my surprise it done it, it was one of the most obediant dogs i had picked up, looks can be very decieving but thats all you need to stop the robbers. lonsdale 0
If you want a guard dog its very hard just to genralise and mention various breed IMO. These dogs mentioned above in general are a far cry from being bred for any kind of purpose, its more about money and exaggeration. Before the breed you need to find a good breeder that takes the original purpose and temperament into account. Not some idiot just breeding the biggest baddest loudest dog on the block with a huge chain thrown in for effect. Take the Am bull i recently judged at an American Bulldog show in the puppy class and was horrified by the terrible nerve of the dogs, even at that young age. Not mentioning the structural issues and health problems. Yes they will guard but for the right reasons i would be interested to see...fear biters are so dangerous and NOT good gaurd dogs. unless you want a ticking time bomb and huge vets bills sat in your garden please do some serious research into what you getting into there are a handfull of breeders breeding ambull with any real morals, knowledge or understaning of what they are doing. The Bull mastiff i am not as familiar with. However the bull mastiff that was the original gamekeepers dog, well i wasn't aware they were still around??Majority of the ones you see now are bred for stupidly huge 'bone' excessive wrinkles, lets not forget being noted for their laid back easy going temperament. I would love to know if anyone does now of any breeders breeding more towards the old bullmastiff? I am biased and will say that i think the ultimate guard is a Neapolitan mastiff - But one that is bred correctly and with function of the dog in mind not the KC type. They are incredibly intimidating to look at, nice and vocal but not a dog that will fly off the handle at the slightest disturbance that i find very annoying. Our working guard had free run of our land and makes herself known if anyone gets too close. She is not overly aggressive but will step up to challenge is asked. She will think before she acts and is extremely calculated. She is not a liability and a safe reliable and trustworthy dog - I trust her judgment and she is a friendly dog once introduced to people. She guards our other dogs and has no dog aggression which is important to us and a dog roaming wanting to rip the throat out of another dog kind of defeats the object?! There is a common misconception that a guard dog has to be some crazed dangerous beast, its more hassle than its worth - that for us is not the case but we know that no one will step foot on or property without her say so. Like is said imo find a breeder that has a family guard in mind when doing the breeding, rather than trying trying your luck with just a certain breed, then you half way there. Good Luck! Sorley x 32
A mean-arsed Bearded Collie (not any of that soft show bred shite), harder than nails and smarter than a barrel of monkeys. Or an ACD Edited January 19, 2010 by Sorley x
sambam 8
i agree that any dog can be a deterant my old collie grey was a good guard dog, if any strange man came in the house he would not leave my mums side and not take his eyes off them, but he loved women so if it was a female burglar hed let her have everything. i seen one of them kangals in a resturant turkey last year and was a nice bitch very friendly. the owner dared me to run off as i said she was a big softie, when the gates where closed at night she was very aggresive if you stood their, there was chikens, cats, rabbits, and other dogs running free in the resturant garden and the kangal wasnt botherd by them, but the owner would set her onto stray cats if they came onto the land, the bitch came across as extremly intelligent, bidable and powerfull
wetdogsmell 99
i have a presa and a american bulldog both are great guard dogs, but you can't go wrong with a german shepard, once its a working type not a slopy backed kennel club retard

borderman45 0
In my house the wife is as scary as hell ! But I Have 2 dark brindle bull mastiffs and a doberman as well as the lurcher and border terrier. All family pets and workers but the 3 bigguns all look the part and luckily enough have never been put to the test. The bullys are big and quick and I dont think you would take the chance! But I have to say a well trained intelligent athletic Doberman is a dog to be reckoned with.
