Nik_B 3,790
Need a car for fishing, shooting, dog and all the other mucky out door activities we get up to. I am only home half the year and wont do that many miles and to be honest alot of em will be on road but there are plenty of times our A3's taken a beasting going down little dirt tracks. I was thinking about an estate but then a 4x4 seems like it will make more sense. I like the look of the old Range Rovers but they seem to be the same price as Landrovers why is this if they're supposed to be better? I'm looking at 2000/2001 year as I only got 5 grand to spend, 6 at a push. Quite like the idea of some offroad capability but nice and comfy leather seats designed for a footballers wife's arse What do you think? who makes the 2.5 diesel engine and are they any good? ANy thoughts on landy versus range? I cant see why I shouldnt get a bit more comfort if they're similar prices. Cheers P.s footabllers wife joke was just a joke...not into sniffing leather seats
louis123 12
For that money, A landy 90/110 will have a lot more off road capabilities than an old range rover, however if you are only doing small amounts down farm tracks and lanes then a range rover will be suffice. You will also get more luxury from a range rover with all the leather seats and extras. However with 6 grand you could buy a nice defender for that money with leather seats and a smart interior. However, defenders are alot more hardy that a range rover so you could quite easily just chuck a dog in the back or get all your fishing gear in without making anything a bit mucky. So its up too you. But id go for a defender with 6 grand any day
Nik_B 3,790
Yeh cheers louis...was trying to figure out why the discoveries were the same price as the range...i thought the range would be more expensive or are they not really that good? I agree in Defenders for sure they are the bomb proof one of the family but without sounding like a total gay I do like a bit of comfort. p.s 6 grand is right out there pushing the limit so I'd rather get something cheaper. Was also looking at a Jeep but keep getting sucked back to the fancy seats of the range. Edited January 6, 2010 by Nik_B
louis123 12
i think that the price of the range rover has dropped so much as they have developed so much in the last few yeears whereas the discoverys and even defedners to a certain extent have remained the same, although the freelanders did have a revamp at one point you still see a lot more older freelanders and defenders about than you do range rovers. Nik_B 3,790
Question is...are the 2000 range rovers any good? Anyone else got any opinions?
Guest Daks
Question is...are the 2000 range rovers any good? Anyone else got any opinions? imo id avoid a range rover they are for stuck up pompus tit headed arseholes those that think they are sssooo much better than everyone else we get them up here amongst the shooting parties and what a bunch of arrogant fuckwits they are, i wouldnt care but they drive shite and are shit off road id rather buy an old panda 4x4 and drive that than one of these!!! i also think that the reason for the defender not changing much is because it works the age old saying if its not broke dont fix it springs to mind just my opinion though lol atvb..daks
bert69 5
discovery anyday of the week, capable off road, comfortable, look good and for 5 grand you'll get a nice td5. also when they go wrong you can get the bits from tescos. I wouldn't touch a range rover at that money, for 5 grand all youll be buying is someone elses problems

How ever my problem is this...yes the Defender is a fantiastic off roader but a good percentage of my miles are on the road, and as I said I do like my comfort especially after a long day out in the rain/mud/cold. I dont imagine defenders are very comfy. While the range is not that great offroad I was imagining it would be a kind of jack of all trades but master of none....survive on the dirt tracks etc but not really for driving full tilt up embankments. Also should be comfy and okish on motorways. Diesel will keep fuel bills down and the 2.5 is the same as the Disco right? And last but not least heated leather seats
mwncidur 0
That age of range rover would be the P38 model. Avoid it like the plauge! Diesel engine is gutless, V8's are much better but do suffer with porous blocks. Along with a heap of electrical gremlins. My money would defo fo towards a disco or defender For good deals have a look at the brightwells auction (google it you'll find it) You could also have a look on a land rover type forum such as lr4x4.com and ask the same question. Or buy a land rover magazine, which there are plenty in the newsagents, look at the back of them at the classifieds.

Are the Range rovers worse built? There seems to be a few ok looking Turbo Diesels. Will start looking at the Discos though... By the way, Defenders are well expensive. I cant find many under 7 grand that arent older than 10 years
mattydski 560
Defenders are fine on the road. If you can get one that has had the centre bulkhead removed, or remove it your self, the seats can be moved back then. I regularly do long distance in mine without the back problems I used to get in my Passat, golf, audi A4 etc... Yes, a Discovery is better on road..thats for sure. But Defenders are better off road.. A modern Defender has less body roll than the older Discos, because the weight is lower down. Go try one and compare.
Guest Daks
just read your reply for 5k why dont you get yourself a fourtrack engine and whip it into a disco then you got the best of both thats my opinion like, engine that will pull a house down and body that wont rot into a million pieces both combined wont make you look like a twat sat in it lol
Nik_B 3,790
Good points...not one person says anything good about the range rover....That is a point of concern Is ther much difference between the TD5 and the 2.5 BMW wengine in the range? also any thoughts on AUto box? or should I stick to manual?
