Nice sunday out

Recommended Posts

Sunday we first went to a new property, mostly woods with rocky hillsides. Beautiful piece of property with cabins along a small river. We saw a flock of more than a dozen turkeys when we first entered the property.

This was the first time out for my friend’s bitch since her final litter last July. She rustled up an opossum in a fallen hollow tree.

She left it after is fainted so we put a young dog in who happily pulled it out.

No crops around so we only found a handful of places of interest. We changed directions and headed over to the dairy farm.

Within a few minutes, she enters by the creek and soon is baying. We can soon hear sounds as though she is pulling something out, and think she has another possum. Then she begins to bay again. Pulling, baying steadily working.

We begin to dig and of course it’s like rock because of our dry summer. Lots of roots to cut thru too. My friend’s grandson clears behind her as she keeps in digging and working.

We now figure it’s a groundhog and work as fast as we can to help her out.

Finally after a little over an hour we break thru at about 3 ft. We pull her out and take a peek with the digital up the tube.

He backs up a bit and then looks for a chance to high tail it out of there.

He enters the other tube and our young hunting partner takes aim . One shot was all it took as he tried to bolt.

This was a big pig, we get the scale out to weigh and it’s a whopping 15 lbs

The farmer came by not soon after and was delighted to see what we had dug up.

Her grandson hunts and traps a lot, but he’s never seen a groundhog up close like this and seemed to really have a good time today. He’s a natural out in the woods and it was a treat to have him along.

Great time we had Sunday and one to remember. No doubt.

Please tell me if them there critters are ok for the table.

You can dress 'em like a rabbit except they have scent glands on their back and inside the forelegs that need to be removed. The glands will be fairly obvious when the skin's off. Soak 'em in salted water overnight in the refrigerator. Use 'em in just about any recipe you'd use a rabbit.

The young'ns are much better. Once they get much over 6-8 lbs (3 -4 K) they start to get a little tough and gamey.
