It would be considered a tactical rifle, not a target rifle as such, not in my book anyway!

.338 Lap Mag was not intended for target work and this rifle is used by some, law enforcement and military as well....

I suppose you could call it target work...but not the generally accepted sort of targets!! :whistling::whistling::thumbs:

Isn't that the calibre that the Brit sniper used when he knocked over a [Censored] at over a mile in some middle east country recently.

is this rifle a trg /or sporting rifle ?

its a trg,the brake stays on wouldn't have thought a moderator would make much difference in that cal apart from wieght, that said quicksilver have or or going to bring 1 out for 338's and 50 cals so if you no anything about them feel free to share.I always apply for moderators to match the rifle to save the£20 if I apply for a variation.cant think were I saw that about quicksilver Im sure it was on here

wouldnt bother with a mod .ive used the .338 in the dtates .its an awsom bit of kit you need the brake on them youd never hold them on target otherwise mind dont forget the ear defenders the muzzle blast is something else ..garanteed tinitus .there a goog bit of kit 220 gn bullet with 70gns of powder .or theere abouts not to be fkd with there bloody accurate aswell 2ins at 600 isnt out of the way ....have fun

cheers rio giv that a try.what do u think on the mounts like you said a rum bit of kit, would you have a scope swap around are stick with it?1 last thing then I think we can put this to bed do you know any where for long range shooting lessons(over 650metres)Im safty 1st and would feel more confident going through that with an instructor.like I said Ive got land that can afford me 700metres and let me sleep easy practicing.the strange thing I have it on an open ticket but cant shoot it on a military range. trg

And the ground WILL move, I hate the b****y things, not quite so terrible for the shooter but everyone else takes a clobbering!!

If you are in the middle of nowhere then :hmm::hmm::hmm:, but I say bin it and get a moderator!!

hear what your saying deka but never yet seen a trg with a mod .wouldnt be many mods good enough and being a high performance rifle the mod would reduce that performancre,,but yes the brakes aint friencly to bystanders

Loads of mods are available even custom made ones up to 20mm and they do not reduce performance mine chrono's just the same with or without check out jackson rifles they sell a mod for the 50bmg

The Lapua .338 is the only round ever designed specifically for long range anti-personnel sniping, the 50BMG being more used for anti-materiel work. Normally zeroed at 600m, effective range 1600 m, can be good for 2000m in the right hands. Use without a muzzle brake is not recommended.

Standard sniping round is 250gr FMJ-BT (LockBase), mv 3000fps, me 4996 ft.lbs

Arguably the .416 Barrett is primarly an anti-personal caliber.

The Barrett and Cheytac were designed as variations on on the original .50BMG. John Browning initially designed the .50BMG as as anti-materiel round in 1907. The point on this thread is that 50BMG was not and is not a sniper round, in the sense of an anti-personnel round. The Lapua .338 was designed from scratch as an anti-personnel round. Frankly, if I got hit by a .338 or a .50 BMG I don't think I'd be in a mood to argue

The 408 chey tac is a round developed by dr jd taylor as a anti personnel sniper round based on the 400 Taylor magnum cartridge. the Taylor magnum is based on a 505 gibbs at no point has the 50bmg had any influence on this round it was specifically designed to fill the niche between the lapua338 and the 50bmg

Perhaps you should google your information before posting it on a forum.

It seems a shame to me that you found my post insulting instead you could have used this thread to learn something.

I googled Lapua .338. It is described as the only round designed FROM THE START as an anti-personnel sniper round. You yourself state that the .408 chey is based on the .400 Taylor which is in turn based on the .505 Gibbs. Hardly what I would call "designed from scratch". In fact, Dan, I was not insulted, just trying to keep it light hearted with a bit of mickey taking  My father's name was Dan. I was always falling out with him as well.

just got a sako trg 42 in 338 lap mag still in its box, would be gratefull for any advice from other owners(scope mounts loads) as this is a jump from what I would normally shoot(.223,6mmppc,6.5/55).Im not a comp shooter so you dont have to get too deep, but all advice welcome

This is a pretty serious calibre and the rifle has a pretty serious price tag....

EEERRRRRR!!!!! What did you list on the FIR 101 that you wanted to shoot with it ..this is not a back garden plinker??

i do shoot at a club just not comp for my own gratification(the back-bittin upsets me,lol)& am lucky enough to have alot of uninterupted moorland to shoot over with exelent back stops and a 700metre disused quarry.of course I research the guns capabilitys before i bought it.just to realy start tounges waggin its on my FAC for target shooting and long range control of deer(& open at that weather you belive it or not).just after a bit of friendly advice thats all and hopefully get to know 1 or 2 cotributors,I aint behind the door just dont get as involved as some it can take over.

Do you reload...this is going to get very expensive down the range if you don't, actually it is going to be expensive even if you do reload!

Energy around 4500ft lb, "Long Range Deer"...how is that defined, so if you get one 100yards away can't you use it???

There are all sorts of calibres and people want them for all sorts of reasons so ATB!

yes I reload but like to start with factory and take it from there that way i find any major flaws with the reloads i can blame myself for it.the longest on the deer would be 650yrds i know there's no need for a gun that big the reason i got it was it was a bargain and my hobby is guns nothing more than that,at 100yrds it would be legal to shoot deer but if thats all your case was when applying for the variation you wouldn't get it.COST!!!!!!!tell me about it regreting my choice on what was a "cheap" rifle.what i realy would like to know is mounts?I bought a 1piece trg mount "cheap" again but when I came to fit a 34mm scope the centre of the scope bottom'd on the tension block of the mount so had to opt for opti lock ring & base, would have gone for picatiny rail and warne mounts? but ive had to sell a kidney to buy 10 empty lapua brass at this rate I should be on paper in 2020.lol

sorry pal this just sounds like aload of nomcence to me ..long range deer yeah ok !! new one to me , long range deer control variation ..thatlll be right :whistling:

Not strange at all. I know of a guy who had one for deer stalking.
