JohnGalway 1,043
My last input to this thread. Can't explain it any further if people don't understand the concept of an "accident". Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
Help me out here everyone...yep, I have Tikkas and I don't have an issue..have I missed something..everyone says they don't like this...can someone tell me quite why and what their issue is??? Cheers!! Load your rifle. Now unload it. You have to flick the safety OFF to unload right? That's my issue. I can load my Remington, and unload it, with the safety ON for the entire operation, I'm a lot happier doing it that way. Remington is safer IMO, it cuts out one more possibility of an accident happening with the safety off. I can see your point about it feeling safer, but you wouldnt load and unload with the muzzle pointing up. Therefore, with good loading practice, it is no safer although it will feel safer. Personal preference thing. Remington was my next choice of rifle after the Tikka, nobody had one, so I never got the chance to handle one. I have Tikka and Remington centrefires and feel totally at ease with both! I see where John/others are coming from and there must be some additional risk. But if you follow all the rules then it is tiny. Accidents can and do happen though, so the safety on situation must have the edge. Not something I have lost sleep over, but point taken! danebrewer10 6
sure accidents can happen, we take calculated risks every day! statistically, i reckon in all honesty that we are far more likley to be injured in a car accident than from shooting, but unless the safety blocks the firing pin or cams it out of alignment, there isn't any difference as it will only be blocking the trigger, like with many airguns... jonty h 0
My old Sako has three positions on the safety catch 1. Safety off 2. Safety on and bolt locked 3. Safety on and bolt unlocked 40 years old but still better quality and has all the answers Quote Link to post
rjimmer 4
Some people don't use the safety. They don't close the bolt until they are ready to take a shot, because they reckon it is quieter than pushing the safety off. The gun is not cocked until the last seconds before a shot. John i know what you mean and agree 100% with you mate it's ok saying point at the ground, finger away from trigger bla bla bla "but you have to put safety off" to unload! should be able to open in safe mode, what a can of worms you have opened :11: Quote Link to post

Mr_Logic 5
Personally safe rifle handling has rules, like always keeping your muzzle pointing in a safe direction. Safety really isn't needed when loading, unloading, just follow the rules. Ultimately it IS personal preference if it worries you or not, doesn't bother me in the slightest. Quote Link to post
activeviii 8
I like the fact that my bolt is locked when the safety is on. a few times i have had it were im walking with unloaded rifle over shoulder (i don't walk with bullet up the spout) and the bolt has popped open on me, if safety is on then bolt is locked and no chance bolt with pop open. probably would do no damage but just my way i guess.
