at what age would you start slimming a lurcher pup down

Recommended Posts

i like a pup with alot of weight on it ,i let mine run like it to start with but not to many runs and then has they get fitter the weight will come off, and i find that most dogs that are run regular will find there own running weight and stay that way

dont be to concerned about its weight, lurchers dont put to much on anyway, unlesss there not well exercised and a good diet! and slimming? no mate! lurchers going to be doing a explosive work out, so it needs plenty stored in him to keep him going mate! cant run a dog on a empty stomach mate!

good question mate and one ive wondered myself ,I have an 8 month old bull cross who was very stocky and probably a little overweight i increased his exercise to about 2 hrs maybe a little more of just walking some ball throwing etc i kept the amount of food the same though and hes started to tone up though he still too young with soft bones to rreally get him fit, when hes old enough will get him into condition by working him. i think the thing to do is increase exercise before you cut down his food but im only learning myself atb mattpost-33232-126271014765_thumb.jpgpost-33232-126271017501_thumb.jpg tyke in the top pic 4 1/2 mth and 6mth in bottom

In my experience as the exercise increases as the mature their weight should stabilise but each is slightly different, some run well light others with a bit of weight, it will all depend on the pup, it's breeding and how old it is started working.. Traditionally I've liked pups on the heavey side but they were paddock reared greys which develop differently than kennel/house reared pups, these may well be better on the lighter side. The young bull cross I've got runs better when a little heavey, to my eyes, but I'm not used to half crosses.
