air gunner 0
Hi i am 17 and have done my GCSEs with all passes and above. and now in my first year of sixth form. In the future i would like a job in agriculture or land management. what sort of jobs are there? I do not want to be a keeper but like the idea of working in the outdoors. Say for example working for the forestry commission doing land management etc. What sort of jobs are there and what qualifications do i need? I always offer a helping hand at farms and stay at two different farms who friends own and have contacts around the area. So what sort of jobs are there Cheers lads Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
Well its not really clear what you want to do? Do you want to go to college or university? If not i wouldnt recomend forestry, no money in timber and very few career options. FTB Quote Link to post
air gunner 0
Thats the problem. im not sure what i want to do. something with money and land. FightTheBan 1,147
Theres pleanty of time mate, dont rush into any degree or job without thinking it through, and most importantly dont go to uni just because your parents say you should. If your hearts not in it you will only fail. The way the economy is anyway the next few years you will do better for yourself if you are in education. Farming is an industry lacking people with skill, not just farm managers. Relief milkers can get 12 quid an hour for example. I am at uni doing an environmental management degree, and work on a farm part time. There will be alot of future careers in renewable energy, but you probably aint interested in that. What do you particularly enjoy about farm work? What would you like to do, if money were no object? Its quite hard, but if i can help any way at least its a start. Cheers FTB Quote Link to post
air gunner 0
yea i know i kind of want to go to uni because of the lifestyle and also the economic climate meet new people etc and if there is a course that i would enjoy and will go towards a job i want then thats the way. I just like the idea of being out doors my main hobby is mountain biking and i like the idea of using the enviroment for recreational reasons and also preserving it and of course making money out of it. I love hands on stuff outdoors im not good at sitting around indoors if i can help it. Your right im doing geography at a-level and renewable energy is not my prefered study! however business studies is great and that could be useful in farm manager positions. I think land preservation and running is the way i would like to go. but as you say i have time i need to try out different things. With my farming contacts what type of thing should i be asking? i really want some inside experiance of their jobs. i have stayed at variouse estates in scotland and have found that running a place like them would be fantastic as they are not used for much if i am honest. they have private deer stalking and driven shoots etc but there is so much potential for other sports such as fishing biking climbing etc. (My main drive after being outdoors and involved in farming/country is Money if there isnt money there i dont want to know. Cheers for your help so far FTB Quote Link to post

FTB your very wrong thereis alot of carrear paths in the forestry commision, and very well payed jobs, and a high demand for people to gt involved in the forestry trade, as more conservation and forest presavation happens now more then ever, im even thinking about looking into a carrear in this line of work myself Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
I thaught he was talking about forestry as in felling trees etc. There is alot of work towards both sustainable forestry and using forests as recreation facilities etc. Both of which he would need some sort of degree in. i was only trying to give the guy some advice, because no one else was, i dont claim to know everything. Thanks anyway for correcting us mate. Cheers FTB Quote Link to post

wezbnp09 0
you cant learn about land in college get out there and learn about the land for yourself im no professional on the matter but i know that sitting in college is nothing like being out on the land and learning for yourself dont get me wrong stay in college get your grades but also go out on the land every now and again and try and test a few tips then atleast u know what your doing when it comes round to doing it Quote Link to post
