HMR barrel lengths But which?

Recommended Posts

Hi All Happy New Year

Just got my FAC and looking to buy a .17HMR prob a CZ varmint 20". Have seen quite a few advertised with 16" barrels. Would prefer my rifle to be as accurate as possible. (yes it down to the shooter as well). Can anyone who has shot both 16 and 20" barrels give me some advice.

I've been wandering about the same question and found a lot to read at http://varmintal.com/17hmr.htm

including a graph of velovcity for differant barrel lengths and these figgures:

Bullberry Barrel Length vs. Velocity DATA

22 inch = 2517 fps, 103 fps spread

21 inch = 2523 fps, 66 fps spread

20 inch = 2515 fps, 86 fps spread

19 inch = 2538 fps, 83 fps spread

18 inch = 2522 fps, 41 fps spread

17 inch = 2505 fps, 43 fps spread

16 inch = 2492 fps, 53 fps spread

15 inch = 2477 fps, 27 fps spread

14 inch = 2432 fps, 70 fps spread

13 inch = 2419 fps, 32 fps spread

12 inch = 2387 fps, 57 fps spread

11 inch = 2338 fps, 45 fps spread

10 inch = 2276 fps, 45 fps spread

I guess the other factor in your thinking should be to find the ammo which suits your patricular rifle.

I'll be interested to follow this discussion. May I add an extra question: Does it make a differance to accuracy to have a stainless or steel barrel?

Cheers,

Halam

Hi Thanks for replying. Re ammo suitability for rifle. Am a member or HMR17.net please see this memo below from that website

"CCI, Federal, Winchester, Remington and Hornady all loaded here at CCI in Lewiston, Idaho with a V-max bullet are identical, with the exception of tip color. Manufactured on the same equip, to the same ballistic specs, using the same components other than color of the tip of the bullets. Obviously the shellcase 'head stamp' and packaging would be different on the various products. "

Therefore it should make no differnence which ammo?

re accuracy some shot will be up to 125 m/yards

dont let that fool you mate the different ammo do make a difference regardless what is made at same factory. cci ammo and winchester shoot ok in my annie. the red tip honday shoots well but the federal are the best. tigher groups from them then anyother ammo in my rifle. 16 inch barrel will be fine.

Just had my new .22WMR chopped to 19", hope the same holds true for this calibre, but as I'm probably never going to be able to check, who knows!

Seems to work ok though!
