arcticgun 4,548
another vote for Dutch Salmons 'Gazehounds and Coursing' a really interesting read I also like Running Dog Addiction mainly for the pics. Read most the others and you can 'take what what you will' from most of them always makes me laugh when I read Plummers 'Sighthounds, longdogs and lurchers' (1990) about hare coursing, he rubbishes peoples claims to be catching 3's etc on a regualr basis, how things have changed I have learned a fair amount from good friends whose judgement I trust, and I hope to continue learning every day..... atvb Richard Quote Link to post
lawrence 657
i could never take to Ted Walsh's stuff, " the best way to excerise your dogs is to take them out along with you on your morning gallop with the horses" type advice makes me cringe, maybe its a class thing. plummer's tall tales still make me laugh and Frank Sheardown's longdogs book had me in stitches, though more for his war time exploits.....german sniper hunting, more recently Scoopy and Running dog adiction stick in my mind,i particularly enjoyed Bolio's single handed hare dogs piece. Bosun11 537
Ted Walsh for me, my first and 'the' best , some bloke called Lloyd wrote a very engaging book of late too It's easy to knock Plummer, by Christ i've done it enough but some very good stuff, has been produced and just when there would of been a lull, his stuff was always there. The older members on here, i'm sure would agree as, if like me, hunted down ALL things dogs and hunting during the 's, you would have read most of his books. Rougues, was a good read, though it's widley known that most material in it came from 'different' sorces and (off lurchers) Fell terrier is outstanding, even if 'some' are missing and the show scene gets too much of a look in! The ammount of work that went into it is to be admired alone, compare it to the Broadhurst book... It (Broadhurst), might look big and bold but it's content is nil. Little effort for maximum profit and boy does it sell... Last and by far the best.... Nathan, if you ain't had the pleasure, then get your feckin finger out, a wonderful tale and a great read...
