ferreting trolley/barrow

does anyone use a trolley or wheeelbarrow of some description to lug all of their gear about whilst ferreting? we have been finding lugging the catch as well as the gear which includes slasher and sickle becasue of the thick hedges we work a bit of a job. when i first went ferreting a few year back with some old boy who had an old wooden barrow that seemed to work well.

 

if you do or can think of any suggestions to the design, as my first prototype is being tesed on saturday. its a butchered fishing trolley which is now more of a barrow and all collapses down into to boot of asmall car. any suggestions like how to attach spades and slashers etc would be great and most space efficent way of carryiing the rabbits

I havent as yet used one, but have always thought it was a good idea, as you say, a collapsable fishing one, would save alot of huffing and puffing carrying large catches home

am looking at getting one defo now, as my pidgeon gear weighs a tonn

I wouldnt even consider using a trolley whilst ferreting, you could leave the slasher at home by doing your prep work in advance, that only leaves you to carry a ferret box / game bag and game carrier of some sort,spades/probes ect.. can usually be fitted with a sling of some sort if required, a young lad like you should be more than capable of carrying the stuff thats required for a days ferreting. Most ferreters (myself included) take everything but the kitchen sink,its simply a case of seeing whats needed for that particular day/venue and leaving the rest in the car so if your struggling i can only suggest your carrying to much un-neccecary gear. so id either travel lighter,buy a quad (for the bigdays) or eat more wheatabix. atb.

As heritage said do your prep work before, if it your regular permission it worth sorting it ready for the ferreting days. Myself I use a 4x4 and a quad but I doing it full time so need them, I also get the farmer to trim out the bottom of the hedges for me, if they want rabbits clearing from thier land they will do this

i bought a collapsable sack truck off ebay......only use it for trapping, i have attached two straps so you can wear it like a ruck sack when its empty.

 

but usually work off the quad, but is is useful in woodland, railway banks etc.

so lets get this straight, some think its mad to take a barrow, yet then quote, get a quad, aint that the same, ie using something to carry the gear, yes I can understand what your saying, but on occassions, using the 4x4 is not an option, therefore its leg power, so carrying 3 to 4 ferts/boxed, a bag with lunch/flask/locators/etc, 2 x longnet/quickset baskets with 100yd nets and a spade is heavy enough, before you have caught any rabbits, lets say you have a good day and catch 25 plus rabbits, thats some weight to carry back,

Never brought one with me but one of my permissions has full time gardeners in the week and theres allway a few wheel barrows about so have used them to hump the catch back at the end of the day.

 

Doubt its worth bringing one, would be ok if ifs quite flat grassy land but if its hilly, sedge grass, woodland etc then I think its easier to carry it.

Been luckier this year as chimps got a 4WD to get all the gear about.

Makes life easier.

Up to then we had always carried the stuff, 2 boxes of ferts my big bag of nets! plus chimps 20 or so, hedging hook spade plus sundries! Last year had bags of over 20 on numerous occasions and you can only get so many on the hook!

We used to hang em up and collect on way back to the motor.

Not so manny about this year bloody typical

 

In John Humphries or Archie Coates Pigeon Shooting book there is a 'design' for a 'barrow' worth a look at.

all the land round about where i am are hill farms so we don't really have such a thing as flat ground so its hard work but its easer than carrying it but it's still hard work :weight_lift2: lol

Never said anyone was mad? Take my hat off to the guys for coming up with some good ideas. I said "personally" I use 4x4 and quad and if I was not able to use them I'd never get round, a 4x4 can go many places if your not scared of using it correctly if your on regular permission you know where to take the vehicles to, then a little walk to your rabbiting. When out for a jolly ( non payment ) take mates spread the load.

 

A lot of farmers will lend you thier quads all you have to do is ask, and if your catching rabbits thier happy to help you out the best they can to make the job easier, they not another breed of human being?
