I've got a a Bulldog rabbiting spade (see here). Can't fault it - strong, well built and easy to use.

I've also got a shorter spade that I don't really like for digging but my buddy loves it. Shorter spades are good for really tight spaces but can be bloody hard work as there is less leverage.

if your looking for a good spade,be it long or short handled id have to opt for a bulldog, theres dozens of diffrent varieties that are solidly built and will last a lifetime.if money is an issue look to the local army & navy (or ebay) as bulldog were one of the manufacturers that produced spades for the military and these can be found for as little as £5, theres diffrent types, some designed as personal issue kit, others for viechles. the best ive come across is the 58 pattern infantry spade (bulldog made) they fetch £3-£7 depending on condition.atb :)
