terrier advice

Recommended Posts

i have currently got myself 5 month old lurcher and am working with her at the moment but really could do with a terrier in the future sometime. what does evryone think a good alround terrier would be for working alongside lurchers and ferrets. it would be mainly worked in bushing for rabbits. what are the suggestions? im fairly new to terriers.

well You dont want one from an earth dog line as you dont really want him going to ground with charlie. And terriers are hard to train to know the difference between a ferret and a rabbit. Terriers are very head strong, a nice springer will be nice and relaxed and have the nose for bushing.

Get yourself a spaniel instead iether a springer cocker or a sprocker or if you do get a terrier dont get one out of generations of earth dogs.atb dell

whys that? what will a spaniel do that a terrier won't? and why not get one from earth dog lines?

Is their any badger setts in the area you hunt??Terriers are without doubt good bushing dogs but i found years ago that getting a terrier to hunt cover [bANNED TEXT] all its got to learn off is a lurcher can be frustrating and dont forget a terriers main vocation is to kill and as your lurcher was their first some jeolousy could develop.I can only speak from exspeiriance of using terriers and now spaniels for bushing over the years my spaniels are trained that [bANNED TEXT] a rabbit is flushed from cover and the lurcher catches it they know not to try and grab it of the lurcher that would be very hard to train a terrier to do.I have heard good reports on the plummer terriers if you do go for a terrier to work with your lurcher and ferrets.atvb dell

I have always used Jack Russells for bushing. The two i use are quite mild mannered compared to some terriers. Yes they will grab hold of the rabbit and bruise it, but that dosen't bother me too much. I must admit i have often thought about using a cocker or springer, but can't imagine they would be as good as terriers in really thick brambles and may be not as quick through the under growth. But never the less i bet they do make excellent bushing dogs. The smallest of my terriers has gone to ground twice on me in 5 years, but this was down rabbit hole.ABT

I have a terrier also and she is brilliant at bushing and very very quick for a terrier. I got her from a farm in Wales for one fifty pedigree papers n everything, she is an old type jack rusell with long legs and is brilliant with the ferrets and lurchers other dogs .,.
