Lurcher bitch's detached toe ligament

Recommended Posts

Tyla has just come back from the vets. Her second toe on her left fore was swollen and after an x-ray they say she has torn the ligament on the side of her toe. They say a minimum of 3 months rest with no excersize at all MAY fix it but they warned that its in no way guaranteed and may happen again first time shes run.

im absolutely gutted, does anyone know much about this or have any experiences?

My next step is to get hold of a greyhound vet and get a second opinion but i dont hold out much hope.

you could wait all that time get one run out the dog for it to go again on the first run. my bitch had a hairline crack just in at the joint .left it off for 6 weeks to mend first run the toe went back up  took her back to the vets only one outcome toe had to be removed. got it done 3 weeks later the bitch was running again. a pic of her foot after 3 weeks.total cost was £170 including all follow up visits and dressings.

i did discuss amputation with the vet. Does it have any effect on the other toes? Would the remaining toes not be more prone to injury?

that's the down side their is always the chance of the outside toe going at some point. you can only run them and hope that nothing happens to the other toes.

I had a bitch which had the same injury.I took her to a grey hound vet.Would not remove toe on a front foot.

Firstly we tried blistering which is the application of a solution which generates heat and blood flow and possibly tightens up the ligaments.there was no improvement.Next we tried injecting a porcilin solution mixed with blood into the toe which hopefully brings stability to the jiont.Unfortunatly there was no improvement.I know other people though who this has proved to be succesful and resolved the problem. The last resort was rest. The bitch then came into season so was rested for good time.I braught her back to work roughly 12 months from taking the injury. When resuming work i strapped the toe to the next good toe with elastic bands made form racing bike inner tubes or elastic bands used when platting horse mains. This just gave support and the bitch stayed sound. After 6 months i ran her without strapping and she had no further problems.Only leave the srapping on when the dog is running. The dog showed no reaction when runnig with the strapping on.

Good luck with the injury.

The vet i used is near the east midlands air port.

Very sensible on charges.

Also advised to keep toe nails as short a possible.Commen injury when running on grass.
