figwood 0
Hi people, I'm wondering if any of you could help me with some advice. I bought a whippet 4 months ago from a couple of women that live by them selves and had her (my whippet)as a pet, and although well looked after and house trained (only a few accidents)and well mannered around people while they're eating and knew how to use the sofa and bed, it was scared wittless of men....I've gotten her over this by hand feeding her on the recomendation of a dog trainer, but she has no intrest in chasing anything. I seen her doing cartwheels infront of lizards (I now live in Australia) and she was running about with a dead parrot in her mouth the other day (don't know if she cought it or not)but she shows no intrest in rabbits..I have just aquired permition on 35,000 acres to use her on..how can I get her motivated? Any suggestions are keenly sought Cheers figwood Edited December 29, 2009 by figwood Quote Link to post

john rust 45
Make a lure(with a rabbit skin) and start draging it past the dog, let it chase and catch. Then do it again, dont get me wrong it wont happen frist/second,third time but patiants(spelling) will pay off.Atb John.Let us know how you go Quote Link to post
figwood 0
Hi people, I want to thank everyone that showed an intrest in my problem and took the time to reply, I am going to answer your questions. Fresh Earth:- Yeah, when I brought he home my flatmates cat did belt het up on her first day..(cat and flatmate are now gone). She is about 9-10 months old now..so hopefully she is just a slow learner. Barnslyben & John rust :-The lure with the rabbit skin is an excellent idea, I'll get on it straight away....no worries of me giving up on her JR, she is my first whippet and I'm giving her a go...she'll be a house dog if she dont make it. Poacher 3161:- I dont know if you know Western Australia, but if you do, I got her from the Chittering Valley..about 45-50 minutes drive north of Perth. Wuyang:- She was about 5months old when I got her according to the vet that checked her over when I first got her, (still had one of her baby teeth) Again I want to thank everyone that replyed..all good advice Cheers Figwood Quote Link to post

whippet 99 2,613
never known a running dog not to chase , unless phycological problems from ill treatment or abuse. not saying this is in your case , but running and chasing is bred in these running dogs. ill health also can stop a dog from running , but shouldnt be a problem in a pup Quote Link to post

I dont know anything of her history, so yeah, she could have been abused for chasing whatever animal before I got her...she was very timmid of men when I first got her,I was feeding her out of my hand for about a month before she would come to me without my having food for her, don't know if that's anything to to with it. Will be trying the rabbit lure exercise as soon as poss and will post on here on her developement Thanks for your reply Figwood Quote Link to post
