patterdale/lakeland

Recommended Posts

Hi this is our first post we gave my parents a patterdale/ lakeland 4 weeks ago it is now 12 weeks old, it seems lovely with people and great with our 11 year old girl but it will not be worked, the pup is not good when you try and stop it from chewing things that it shouldnt,it growls and pulls back it lips, shows teeth and bites hand or will snap at your face, i think i have made big mistake getting this pup, i am experienced lurcher and parsons owner but have not had much to do with patterdale/lakeland, will pup out grow this or is it bad sign of aggression in this pup, the breeder showed me the parent of pup they seemed good natured they were both working.

it needs to know whos boss by the sounds of it

Hi yes agree with you , this might be a stupid question but How would you do that? we have tried loud voice saying No,picked up by scruff, putting on its own after biting etc nothing is working yet , dont want to give up as is a nice pup but likes to get his own way and is very confident for age! would realy appreciate any advise as my my parents love him and want to teach him good manners.

just because its from working stock it dos`nt mean its goin to be aggresive. . sounds like a young pup finding its feet just needs to be shown whos boss..why chose a working breed from working parents for a pet home ? plenty of other breeds about ..

Hi

yes you have made a good point , i took advise from the breeder who told me that they make great pets , and i did not mean that working dogs are aggresive i have working lurcher and parsons both have lovely nature, thankyou for your feed back.

Stick with it fella it should come right in the end.The cross that you have chosen are known to be game little fellas but any dog is what you make it mate.

Scruff it ,a little shake and pleanty of eye contact and I'm sure it will ome good in no time.I have let two pups one each out of my last two litters go to local pet homes to very good friends simply because they have waited a long time to get one of my pups and I knew they would have a first class home, ones now 1yr old and one is two and they are both craking family pets and I see them both at least weekly. mine are parsons x patterdale but the same rules apply mate, get them right for a start and all should turn out well.

Good luck

Have your parents had dogs (terriers in particular) before? Perhaps they should join a local dog training club for help and to get the pup socialised before he turns into a little big boots.

thumbs.gif maybe your parents and the pup would enjoy puppy training classes they`ll work on all the basic commands ,recall, lead training , and advice. try crateing him aswell they soon cool down in thr own space , dont let him take control..good luck hope it works out,

basic training and consequence,he needs to know that aggresion is not acceptable to anyone.

puppy classes can be a big help with getting him started. i find that keeping them tired makes life easier( playing).

i don't think that catstration is the key. i also am not sure that a dog from working stock should be kept purely as a pet( although good nerves and even temperament should be a goal of breeding in all workers).

get the dog out and work him as best you can,do him justice.

ratting, beating, bushing are not his intended job but the little dogs make good all rounders imho,he will love it and i would be surprised if youdo not enjoy seeing him work to a high standard.

atb with the dog and let us know how it goes bud.
