Rich286 0
Hi everyone New to this site and as yet not into hunting. However, I am interested in dogs and the different breeds, their abilities, uses and characters etc. I wondered if there was the ideal 'All Rounder'. A dog that could hunt, kill, retrieve and if need be, become a guard/protective dog as well. I have a ten year old daughter and would like to know which breeds develop strong bonds with their owners and have protective natures? A cross breed, I guess - a Lurcher type no doubt. in particular I would be keen to understand the mix and why. At the moment I am interested in Staffies and Patterdales. To the point where I have been looking for a Staffy x Patterdale. However, when I have been searching the add pages, I am coming across a lot of different crosses. Hence my question. Looking forward to all your advice. Many thanks in advance P.S. When I say hunt, I'm thinking of Rabbits - something that I can eat. Not bothered about Ferreting - yet. Not into Fox hunting either. dogs-n-natives 1,182
I would think that a collie based lurcher would be right up your street, they are a very loyal dog to their owners and family. Are probably the most bidable and easily trained of the lurchers, and have amazing hunting ability... find a pup from parents that you would be happy with, and you wont go far wrong(regardless what breed). Dave C 63
I dont think the Staffy x Pat would be the best at rabbiting, they take a few in cover but getting them to retrieve the rabbit without shreading it will be another downfall. Like Dogs n native said above, a lurcher would be your best bet and there is alot of crosses to choose from, in my opinion you need to be looking at the Collie based, Beddlington Based or GWP based lurchers, from working lines all will do you a good job. Let us know how you get on. Dave, Quote Link to post
Rich286 0
Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Dave, what is GWP ? At the moment, I am thinking of whippet x staffy x collie and maybe x bedlington. Would like a smaller dog if poss i.e. not as big as a greyhound!! Quote Link to post
Dave C 63
GWP is German Wirehaired Pointer, there blood is becoming more popular with Lurcher breeders. Pointer of this site has one and she is a very versatile and capable hunter. Dave. Quote Link to post

Would be intersting to hear from people who have Gwp lurchers. Mart Quote Link to post
