wuyang 513
Bull blood seems very prominant in the make up of many of todays lurchers. I would be interested to know what it adds to the lurcher that just used to take pre ban hares and rabbit. I realise you get the staying power etc from addition of saluki, trainability from border collies...etc etc and i realise most lurchers don't need to put on their boxing gloves to course and catch. I am in no way attacking the addition of bull and i know there will be some 1st class catch dogs out there, but what does it contribute? ATB Not interested in fox etc...just pre-ban hares and rabbits. Quote Link to post

marky r 25
i carnt see why anybody would add bull blood in to a lurcher for rabbits and hares it would be a waste Quote Link to post
Cleanspade 3,324
the addition of bull blood gives muscle. power. and drive. but what is often overlooked the ability to overcome injuries and a resistence to shock. a very important atribute in a working lurcher Quote Link to post
Guest dances
good answer spade and like they said a bullx for rabbiting is overkill. like a mortar for pheasants Quote Link to post
hogdog 61
A good Bull Terrier will have endurance as good as any other dog, a fighting dog would be required to give everything it's got for hours on end. Very few breeds are tested for endurance in the way a fighting dog would be. A good Bull Terrier also has lots of other attributes that are useful, the obvious ones are jaw power and strength but they are also known to have alot of other good qualities, intelligence, good nose, good bone, good feet (which alot of running dogs seem to lack), prey drive, physical sturdiness and a never give up attitude. Not all Bull breeds are useless, over-muscled lumps, like alot of breeds it's finding a good one that counts and there are alot more bad than good out there. Quote Link to post

I will give you an example, I keep Welsh Terriers, for my sins. They will fight the Devil, but their recovery rate is poor, they seem to go into themselves when they have been hurt. So personally I think that Bull blood does help the recovery time. This is only my opinion, but what do I know, I have only had dogs thirty odd years. Quote Link to post
boyo 1,398
i think it was lord orford without looking it up that put bull blood in to the early greyhound to add that added extra that the greyhounds of the time were lacking and they say thats where the brindle colours in greyhounds come from so obviously they knew what they were doing as the modern greyhound has more guts than what is good for its own good. i think ifyouhave that little bit of bull blood it keeps them going when the going gets tough whether on big or small.
