netfull 0
Hi, Just sorting out my Purse nets prior to a day out this week sometime,I learned some very valuble facts from an old hand a few years back(see the thread on bolting rabbits)one of these facts was the use of Elerberry as a net peg,I scoffed at his suggestion,as a lad playing in the woods I thought it was pretty useless stuff bieng hollow and very weak, even the berries tasted awfull,That was were he told me I was wrong,he advised me to cut a thick limb of Elderberry during the summer months, about 6" diameter and between 6-8" long strip off the bark and with a small axe gradually cut the block down to dozens of pegs, anyone trying this it will be apparent how easy it is to do,as Elderberry is absolutely soaking in sap you can whittle away like Jed Clampett on the stuff!and produce some exellent looking pegs. Then drill a 3mm hole in the top to secure the draw cord, and finish it off with a notch to keep the net tidy thus eleviating the need for elastic bands. Left to dry for the remaining summer months the pegs will become seasoned and very strong,I tried breaking one but to no avail. Anyone making their own nets I would reccomend taking a break from the tedium process by making pegs as above. Your thoughts welcome, Netfull. Quote Link to post

OldTrapCollector 377
The old timer rabbit snarers all used elder pegs on their snares - it is easy to work when green, and is very lightweight and strong when dry OTC Quote Link to post
