New Knife

Recommended Posts

Alright lads, I don't know about you but a knife is very important to me.

I have one with me most of the time when im out and about, I bought a knife in France about 7 years ago and its been the best knife iv ever had, its a Laguiole made by G.David the blade is 12C27 stainless.

Iv skinned more rabbits and hares than i can remember with it.

The trouble is it's big, and with the state of the law id like something smaller.

I want a knife A folder with a fine blade thats easy to sharpen and holds its edge,Im not after felling oaks Id like another knife with a 12c27 blade.

Iv got a drawer full of rejects that i dont like.

Can anyone recommed a decent knife thats not a million quid?

Heres a picture of my knife so you know what im after, basically a smaller similar sort of thing.

No, I'm afraid not, and with them being based in Portugal by the looks of things, I'm not entirely trusting. However for it be a scam, all they would be getting is just over 12 pounds, which mustn't be worth it, so maybe they're just not well made, or everything in mainland europe is cheap.. BUT I don't think it is quite that cheap.

Oh, and I was also looking at this knife: Walter S.A. Red Wood Folding Knife. It looks quite similar to the one you posted a picture of so I thought I should send a link. All perfectly legal for everyday carry an all, so you'd be fine with the coppers.

Get yourself an Opinel then get on to British Blades .com Speak to a guy called Longstrider once hes worked his magic on the blade you will only ever need to strop it. I use mine every day and its still as sharp as the day he sent it to me

 good knifes

Well i found my new knife.....

It's made by EKA in Sweden,

I was looking through the countrymans and saw Moonraker accesories advert, it said 12C27 stainless so i ordered one,

Tony (nice chap) rang me back and said sorry they are AUS 8 stainless, I thought i would get one anyway considering the price,

£19.95 free postage.

Look what comes in the box.......

Is it me or is that alot of stuff for less than £20?

Im really pleased with the knife, its razor sharpe and comfortable to hold, they also do it in hi-viz orange

I dont know much about Aus 8 except there are some very expensive knifes made from it.

This seems like a bargain to me.

425M-12C27

Both are very similar to 440A. 425M (.5% carbon) is used by Buck knives. 12C27 (.6% carbon) is a Scandanavian steel used often in Finish puukkos and Norwegian knives. 12C27 is said to perform very well when carefully heat treated, due to its high purity. When done right, it may be a slighter better choice than 440A and its ilk.

AUS-6- AUS-8- AUS-10

(aka 6A 8A 10A)

Japanese stainless steels, roughly comparable in carbon content to 440A (AUS-6, .65% carbon) and 440B (AUS-8, .75% carbon) and 440C (AUS-10, 1.1% carbon). AUS-6 is used by Al Mar, and is a competitor to low-end steels like 420J. Cold Steel's use of AUS-8 has made it pretty popular, as heat treated by CS it won't hold an edge like ATS-34, but is a bit softer (and therefore weaker) and tougher. 8A is a competitor of middle-tier steels like ATS-55 and Gin-1. AUS-10 has roughly the same carbon content as 440C but with slightly less chromium, so it should be a bit less rust resistant but perhaps a bit tougher than 440C. It competes with higher-end steels, like ATS-34 and above. All 3 steels have some vanadium added (which the 440 series lacks), which will improve wear resistance and refines the grain for both good toughness, and the ability to sharpen to a very keen edge. Many people have reported that they are able to get knives using steels that include vanadium, like 8A, sharper than they can get non-vanadium steels like ATS-34.

How tragic, i enjoyed reading that, seems aus 8 is caparable with 440B and both are better than 12c27 unless its carefully heat treated,

I woulda gone for an opinel personally, £20 for an everyday knife is too much to spend for me. I have a few very nice knives, including a lovely finnish one i picked up in lapland 2 weeks ago, but my opinel is always sharp and to hand. The bonus is if i lose it i won't worry, i'll just get another and know it's a good knife everytime

Daveo

That knife of yours (original photo ) is legal. Its a folder with 4 inch blade. You only need to show good reason to be carrying it, if stopped. Looks a good knife.

Take a look at these Opinel.

Very much the same knife.

I hate opinels, they rust and seem to be made from margerine not steel.

If you like them fair play to you but i would'nt have another.

And they have a weak build they feel like they are going to snap and they rust and they are gay.

I dont like them at all.

I personally feel that this EKA was well worth the money.
