Ratreeper 441
Alright i am new to dogs but i am as keen as hell. I can't get any dogs for a few years max but i am doing all my research and hopefully getting out with a few mates so i can make a good choice. Anyway i want a dog as a good ferreting companion but mostly lamping. My first thoughts were a small lurcher with some collie in? But as i just said i know f**k all. However before the ban what would people consider the minimum size for a dog to take fox? Not to kill outright just hold it until a bull type gets there. Blair has tried to stop young lads like me enjoying field sports but i can still ask Is size a big factor or are we talking about ball size instead Hopefully in a few years i can have my own little pack i can't wait. I have been out and i can't stick to lurchers or terriers so i will be getting a patterdale and i need help choosing the lurcher. Maybe even a Boerboel if i have the room because i f*****g love them and maybe it will help kill some stuff  Quote Link to post
jpnixon 7
you should not be lamping foxes with a dog that can't kill a fox outright thats not what its about if your bringing on a young dog then you match him with a dog that will match his speed and kill a fox. If your looking for an all round dog i would reckonmend a 3/4 bred bull cross good for foxing and is good for rabbiting. Quote Link to post

steve109 43
you do not need a dog that stands 10ft tall to do any job....... Quote Link to post
colliejohn 840
you do not need a dog that stands 10ft tall to do any job....... in my own opinion a dog between 20 /23 inches is big enough, dogs of this size seem not to get knocked up as much than dogs that are of a bigger size, also smaller dogs seem to be more agile which is a plus point when ferreting, big dogs have their uses especially for bigger quarry, but as i only do ferreting daytime hunting up work and lamping ,the small collie cross bitch i own does the job. regards collie john. witton 6
What if for say it wasn't illegal to run fallow deer (does) What sort of size of dog would be needed to pull one single handed? I know its illegal and have NO inclination to do so but it will be interesting to hear your thoughts on the subject. Good hunting David Quote Link to post

dickyboy 1
its been said before that dogs of 20" will take all quarry but it gonna get knocked about by thee bigger stuff! and poss carried around by the bigger deer species............but then a big dog loses agility If you wnat to take everything and if your young like myself  and can only have one dog then i would say have a dog which will be able to physically take bigger stuff..........something around 24"- 26" would cover most stuff.......... if your after taking 1 fox as a maybe once a season then a beedy whippet would probably suffice but some of the people on here used to(before the ban) take several a night and a little dog probably won't cope like a big bullcross or wheaton x!! If your running everything i like salukix's, bullx's or the new kid on the block the wheaton x!!! theres loads of people on here that write about there dogs over the year and tell you what there dog does then if they have a litter or stud it out from a dog ytou like then enquire about one of the pups I personally have a pointerx he's 26" so should be able to tackle most things but very big build there fore is not the quickest its not just about height it is about build etc as well if i could i would have a very racy, slight built 24" ish dog to help him out on the small fields i have but he does alright and is adapting well!! Read what other people do with there dogs and see what suits you!! Fallow i'd say a dog of around 70lb and 25" should do the job nicely!!! i'd like to know what the experienced would say!! I know dogs of all sizes will do it but ideal to take regular!?!?! Quote Link to post
witton 6
oh lol so lets just say if a 22inch whippet cross bitch was to run one before the ban and she had the balls the out come could well be in the dogs favour? Quote Link to post
dickyboy 1
yeah i'd say she has a chance but if she tried to do it regularly then obviously the odds get built up for her to get injured but once or twice a season she'd probably fair alright Quote Link to post
witton 6
what a crying shame its illegal I guess i will never get to test my we bitch Quote Link to post
steve109 43
lets just say you work together as a team...if you know what i mean..........many moons ago my 23in bitch was quite capable...tho she would often get pulled around abit....[team work]...... :)manymany moons ago.... Rabbithunter 456
you do not need a "big bull cross" for foxes, pre-ban i have seen 22" beddyxwhippets nailing them no problem. As for fallow deer question, i would imagine you would need quite a sizey dog. Must be strong, most fallow does can weight 100lbs. Although there is well was, a good strain of running dog, that was known to single handed take RED deer. Quote Link to post
