Recommended Posts

alright ive asked loads of people this with a load of mixed answers . does anyone know if my dog will run, turn and catch with a broken tail

my mates dog has the same problem he closed the boot of the car on it when she was a pup she can run and turn ok but when she goes down for the strike she goes tumbling head over heals normally with d rabbit but she loses alot of rabbits over it 2.i think if her tail wasnt like it she would be an outstanding dog but over this she is only averge.

The dog's tail absolutely DOES NOT need to be docked (amputated) if it is a clean break with no bits of bones sticking through the skin which could cause infection. As long as you immobilise the tail within a rigid tube (empty syringe case for example: not cardboard which is not strong enough and will go soggy) until it has healed then all you should be left with is a possible kink in the tail. I have had 3 broken tails in lurchers over the years and only one needed to be amputated as it was broken in 2 places and there were bits of bone sticking through the skin: she wrapped it round a barbed wire fence!

My own vet said that it is very common for dogs to break their tails, usually the owners shutting the dog's tail in a door, and a lot of times the owners don't even know the dog had broken its tail! Very waggy tailed dogs will need to be kept very quiet whilst the tail is healing but I've never known a simple break to cause a problem and even if it is kinked it certainly won't affect the dog's rabbit catching ability.

He doesnt say how old the injury is, making me think its not broken otherwise he would know if it could run surely? Hence my question of it being injured and just taking time to heal. The dog will be in serious pain as I said if its broken, I never mentioned after it had healed, as I said if it had healed he would know if the dog was able to run or not. Splinting is fine, but he also hasnt mentioned doing this, so one can only read what is in front of them and draw conclusion from that.

Broken or docked tails on running dogs can affect their balance but a keen dog will overcome it all in relatively short order. We've had to dock tails to avoid infection and other times they just heal siometimes straighht, sometimes crooked. If a crook tail slwos them down it won't be for long if the dog has real drive.

Cheers.

one of my dogs got a broken tail a couple of years ago right in the middle of the tail ..i heard the crack when it happened from 30 yards away  ...local vet wanted to take the tail of ,,so i went to a greyhound vet who strapped it real good and all was well and she still has her tail..she is still a great dog and has not missed a beat since ...get the dog off to a good vet who will strap it up for you and then give the dog some time to heal ,,,all the best
