Edgar 1
The other week I was shooting around a farm yard and fount a small shed about 10 yards long full of pigeons. I Went to shoot one but upon looking through the scope I could only see a grey blob because it was so close. Then they all flew off. At home I removed the scope from my rifle and refitted the rear sight. After a quick re zero and practice I went back to the shed. I shot three pigeons before they all dissapeared through the hole in the roof. The open sights were so much quicker and easier to use at short range in the confined space. I picked up the pigeons and sat down to wait for the rest to return. After only 10 mins they did and a shot 2 more. A while later a rat ran out of a hole in the wall, paused to inspect the pigeon blood stains and was shot. After a few hours I had shot 13 pigeons and 2 rats. Not a bad day! The thing is I used to use open sights all the time for everything before I got a scope and still do when its easier. It means the gun is lighter, aiming is faster and very close range shots aren't a problem. But most people seem to think you need a scope, why? A lot of guns don't even have open sights any more. True your range is slightly reduced (25-30 yards for me) but long range shots aren't always necessary. What does every one else think? Do you use open sights or are scopes another "essential"? zini 1,939
I used to use open sights as a lad mate but always use a scope now. My 3-12x44 Nikko Stirling has no problem at close range at all so i dont ever need open anymore. Even my Tasco 6-24x50 will pick up targets ok at 10 metres. There is nothing wrong with using open sights though pal and i cant fault you for using them. Zini Quote Link to post
JackReid 35
With a bag like that mate, why worry about using a scope? As long as your having fun with it still and your getting good results. I suppose having a nice scope really allows you to get to know your guns shot placement etc, but for sub 25 yard shooting and your good enough with open sights then keep doing it.. Love how the rat came out for a taste of blood and got nailed hehe! As zini said you dont have to have a problem with a scope at close range, I would have mine on the lowest magnification which is 4x (my scope details are bellow on my signature) and if you not zero'd for a long distance then a bit of hold under and you should be fine. Practice makes perfect but I would love to have a go with some open sights but mine didnt come with. All the best! Quote Link to post
