They can , and some do a proper job.

However, most even so called working strains are bred for rabbiting and ratting.

But, if you get the right type, take your time with him/her, and cross your fingers, they can be a useful dog to have around.

I can understand why they are not more popular amongst digging lads - easy to ruin, some are temperamental to the point of winding you up.

And let's face it, they aint as macho looking on the lead as a bull headed Patt. :D

Best, when crossed with Lakie IMO, or 3/4 Beddie, 1/4 Lakie.

i had two when i lived at home...bloody long time ago(before you say owt)

both were from working stock, digging not just ratting .

Max the dog was an ok bushing dog but wouldnt work fox after getting a taste of the sharp end.(well over 2 before he entered as well)

kate the bitch was the worse working dog i have ever seen, she was scared of her own shadow and

never killed a thing in her 12 yrs on the earth.ran away once when out ferreting and i found her under a mates car shivering like tiger woods on a lie detecter test

she ended up as a pet(my mother wouldnt let me put her down).

after that i swore i wouldnt work another, too big for a lot of sets around here.

im not fond of there coat either, i was always pulling grass seeds from there feet and eyes and ears.

read the other bedlington topic from 2005, the best working terrier thread on here.

there are some lads grafting the bedlington and long may they do so, but finding a good one is hard work for the novice and probably as hard for the lads in the know.

my first ever dog was a bedlington cross whippet 23 years ago. my mate got me it for twenty quid. was george newcombe bred ,rillington strain.was great ferretting bitch, she would follow the ferret above ground with her nose, just point where the ferret was. no one had locators then.

she would go through the thickest brambles after rabbits. i knew some people in leeds who kept small rillington strain of workers a few years ago .

i got invited last year off a lad on hear to go digging with so i turned up with my 2 lakies worker to worker bred he had 2 beddies one of mine went in a hole 1 minute later it came out i said nothing at home there pal so he sent in one of his 10 mins later it came out as i said nothing at home he started to call my dogs because it only lasted a minute the second dig his went in first lasted 10 mins again nothing happened sent mine in 2 and a half hours later and 6 foot down we dug to a dog fox so purpose of my story i think beddies are a waste of space and i wouldnt have one in my kennel.
