salukiwhippet 6
Just out of interest who else Dare's to stray from the .223/.243/.308, and try something else more exotic ? .260 rem Dont think it qualifies as exotic but certainly unfashionable but I've gone from .243 for everything to a .22 hornet for vermin and fox, just as deadly out to 150-200 yards but very quiet, as cheap as a .17hmr, no recoil, and rifles as cheap as chips 'cos no-one wants 'em! I've shot one fox with .243 since I've had the .22H, and that was only 'cos I'd run out of hornet ammo! .243 gets kept for bambi now. James Quote Link to post
AzMaN 0
i have 6.5 x 55 on my ticket but again thats not that un-common is it? Quote Link to post
waidmann 105
i have always tried to use a caliber that is readily available due to ammo sourcing etc. i'm sure that other cal will do the job and will prob be very good. the drawbacks would put me off tbh. whatever you choose atb in the new year with it Quote Link to post
DeerNut 0
Ive a 7mm08 which is very under estimated used it for the past 5years with some very good results. Quote Link to post
mattydski 560
Just in the process of buying a Hornet for exactly the same reasons as above.... I'm mothballing the .243 for the time being. Quote Link to post
JonathanL 4
I currently have 6.5x54mm and a .14 Walker and some other not so exotic stuff. Have a 9mm RF shotgun too. Previously I've had both .460 and .257 Weatherby's. Used to have a .416 Rigby as well. Edited December 26, 2009 by JonathanL Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
Just out of interest who else Dare's to stray from the .223/.243/.308, and try something else more exotic ? .260 rem Horses for courses chap. Strange way to look at it, Dare to stray away from... I have what I need, guess what, all of the above. With the ammo choice available for .223/.243/.308 I have no need to dump any and get, for example a .260. I also have no need to add an extra calibre anywhere within that group! That is not a criticism of any other calibre, they all have a use, if anything I perhaps have a place/slight requirement for a Hornet! Thought about it a few times as my cabinet holds, FAC air rifle, .22lr, .17HMR, .22WMR (gap ) .223 etc. I do my best to keep abreast and evaluate other calibres all the time, I am not adverse to change and spent more than a bit of time looking at the .204 about 18 months ago, many rate them, I don't have a big enough requirement! I have a HMR, it has a place, it is not the new messiah, it is NOT a replacement for, or better than, a .22WMR, it is different, and different enough for me to have one in the cabinet! Problem generally with new, or out of the norm calibres is that their use becomes relatively specialised, not a problem in itself but many want a multi task rifle. I am in the fortunate position off knowing and shooting with many people, now and over the years, as well as being involved with shooting clubs since I was a teenager! My selection of calibres is born out of some considerable experience over many years of many calibres and use of them. Mine do what I need, so at the moment I have no need to stray anywhere. RicW 67
I met a guy a few years ago who used a Weatherby .378 Magnum on Red and Sika. He reserved his .460 for African and American trips. He let me fire his .460 on a range. Terrifying. Blew me 10 feet backwards and I was lying down at the time. Ric Quote Link to post

Ric The .460 was the first centre-fire rifle I bought - Christ knows why! It was horrendous with full charge ammo which is something I shot only rarely. However, reducing the bullet weight dramatically reduced recoil. I used to make up lighter loads using a 405grn soft-point bullet designed for .45-70 ammo and 112grains of H-414 I think it was. The most fun I had with it was smashing bowling pins to bits with a very light load using Hornady 300grn JHP's over about 120grains of powder. This load was easily mild enough to shoot off a bench-rest at 25 yards. The problem with very large cases is that you have trouble using low powder volumes as it causes hang-fires. Therefore, you either have to put up with lots of noise and flash or.....lots of noise, even more flash and lots of recoil. Fun though! J. Quote Link to post

My thoughts on worrying about the more exotic calibres are well documented, but I am enjoying this thread - lots of useful info... Quote Link to post
