Tiny 7 1,694
Like been said iv seen some ferrets get some real nasty bites from rats, Thats why i dont use mine on them i dont see the need to when the smoker is a very efficient tool when ratting, That why i dont drop my ferrets in i dont see the point in MY ferrets taking unneed punishment when the smoker shifts them just fine, But each to there own.. lurcherchavvy 3
ferrets get beat to peices i've done it a few times with big dog ferrets but they get battered.....best of using a smoker pal Quote Link to post
Jamie93 57
I don't rat with mine either. I wouldn't want to take the chance of my ferrets getting badly bitten, also with rabbits they are a lot less vicous and they are the added bonus of filling the freezer. James Doyle 59
i dont specifically set out to hunt rats but i have had to do a few jobs for people lookin for rid of rats around the house and personally i wouldnt worry about them getting bitten wouldnt a kick from a rabbit do the same if not more damage? atb James Quote Link to post
Tiny 7 1,694
Its not the fact of them taking a few bites fella, Iv seen ferrets come out blinded by faceing rat, And im on about seasoned ferrets here ones that have been kicked of a few rabbits no doubt, The reason why i dont put my little ferrets down too rats is like iv said i dont want them come out blind just cause iv put them down too a few rats where i think a smoker can do the same job without get marked/hurt, Iv had ferrets thats worked rabbits year in year out acounted for thousand of rabbit over the years and i know that i can take the same ferret out again in the morning cause i know that the rabbit never gave my little jill anywhere near as much stick that a rat could, Some will say im soft but just because you can pick ferrets up for a £5 dont mean that they dont deserve a little respect, This is only my opinion and i know there hundreds of lads up and down the country that work there ferrets to rats and good luck too them, But mine i only keep for rabbiting, Yis T 7 Quote Link to post
Bradford Lad 74
I agree with Tiny 7, they may only cost a fiver but for me it's the time and effort spent on handling them, you cant help but bond with them and why risk em when a smoker will bolt more rats for the terriers. Coneytrappr 30
Jackson, I'd say the chances of a fert taking a serious or fatal injury from a rabbit is far less than taking one from a rat. The chances of a serious rat inflicted injury being too great for me to 'chance' it. Plus, my ferrets are good at what they do. I don't want to risk them on some stinking rat that can be bolted by other more effective means and which won't even go to the pot or freezer. That was the long answer. Short answer is that I like my ferrets. Quote Link to post

Brimmer 220
Have used them on rats in the past and will do again in the future. (but will admit they dont get lots of work on rats.) Not into putting tiny jills into rat holes to do the job, just big fast poley hobs into more open places like under pallets and junk piles. The little jills allthough the size of a stoat, are not in the same league as one, and will get smashed up for sure. The bigger poley hobs i have owned have held there own against many a rat, and are more than capable of sorting them out. It takes an experienced ferret to boss rats, if you feel the need, then try to get a couple working a single rat until they learn to deal with the sharp end. Quote Link to post
Jebus 3
I don't agree with ratting with Ferrets for the following reasons: The ferrets go down into the rat hole and get covered in diseases etc, If the ferret gets bitten by the rat it could cause Wheels Disease, then these may well be passed on to you when you come into contact. Rats do smash ferrets up and give them a good thrashing. If you have the slightest bit of respect for your ferrets, you wouldn't work them down rat holes. Quote Link to post

nod 285
I have done a couple of times the first was not intentional but great results, rats will bolt very quickly when you put the ferret in a good hob will easilly sort out a rat, as for getting disease from rat holes think that is a long shot rats go down rabbit holes too.
