Just crossed my mind

Recommended Posts

Sorry, just a though, i was just sat thinking when this crossed my mind.

If you've got a semi-auto chambered to 3inch (76mm) that could only hold 2 in the mag and one in the chamber, if you were to out 65mm carts in the mag, wouldn't you get 3 in making the semi auto 3+1, making the shogun illegal, or am i wring, sorry, just when i think about these things, it really bugs me, i mean iv been sat with the tape measure trying to work it out :icon_redface:

You need a new tape measure ...

76+76=152

65+65+65=195

Not going to fit..ATB!!

What i mean is a 3" semi auto would have say 7.5" in the magazine. Making it 190mm divide by 3 = 63 making it a 3+1

With a shotgun of current UK spec you are not going to get the extra one in without a bit of engineering.

Obviously, in many other countries more carts are allowed, and the manufacturers have a way of dealing with this.

Best not to play with it unless you want to go down the FAC route!!

Met some bloke out walking his dog while ferreting a few weeks back and he was bragging about how he could get 4 2 1/2" carts in his Browning. Which I thought was a bit daft considering he didn't know me or my mate, either of us could have been off-duty police or FEO's.

Whether you can do it or not, don't... unless you want to have your Shotgun declared Section 1 and then you know you're in the clear and legal.

I've never had a S/A but I have the impression from others posts that the action of a 3.5" gun, unless it is adjustable, would not work with 2" cartridges.

Likewise, but I think that a 3" gun would just about work, and could take 3 x 2". I am open to correction from those who actually know what they are talking about tho'!

My mate has a browning semi and he can get 3+1, illegal as it may be, he has a restriction cert from the proof house.

I had a Browning years ago and it was set for the number of cartridge amounts with a metal disc on a steel rod in the cartridge tube ie 2+1 for normal shotgun if you turned it to fac you could slide the disc further up the rod allowing to fit more shells and it was proofed and set at this, if you had a normal shotgun licence you moved the disc at your own peril and you became an illegal firearm holder.

I also had 2 Beretta semi autos chambered for 3'' magnum, you could put a 3and a half in them but once you fired the first one it would jam trying to recycle the second one, because of the lengh of the crimp, we got around this by getting 3 half magnum 56gram cartridges from John Forsey guns which had a rolled crimp with a little clear plastic disc in the end and these cycled fine we were then concerned with the proofing of the barrel as it was only proofed for 3 inch cartridges so we bought a 3 and half magnum baikal semi auto from Edward brothers and these guns would fire anything.

We used the guns for goose shooting, and occasional fox,my opinion for what its worth is generally by the time you have unloaded 3 shots flying birds or running animals have become out of range for a fourth cartridge, my shooting buddy had an fac semi auto and he rarely got the fourth shot off.
