the best way of toughing a pat terreir

I was talking to a mate of mine last night about this... neither of us could work out EXACTLY why you want to 'toughen up' your dog???

Perhaps you could throw some light on your reasons why. Is it mearly a 'macho' thing or do you think your dog will really fail when it matures? Or are there some concerns with regard of breeding?

The best dog (generic) i ever owned, with out a doubt, was a little black 'lakie' type bith. Kind as a christian and quiet as a church mouse in carpet slippers, but she NEVER let me down. No aggression in the kennel or towards other dogs but a true and honest grafter.

(I know the older members on here will have seen these photo's but.....)

I have her son and daughter both have VERY different attitudes towards work. The bitch was flying at 7 months, infact had a 16 hour dig with a coulpe of lads from fell and moorland after an escape accident!! The dog (full litter brother) wasn't too keen till he was 12 / 14 months BUT AT NO STAGE DID I TRY TO 'TOUGHEN' HIM UP.

just let him grow in his own time. Needless to say, if he had reached say 2 and shown no interest then i may have been concerned but 10 months??

So i ask again... Could you tell us WHY you think you need to 'toughen your dog up'?

i can see where this guy is coming from,i felt the sameway about my dog, but,i hasten to add it was thru my own lack of experience with working dogs....i wanted a tough little dog that would do what comes naturally,my dog at the time seemed a little too soft, always rather subdued and a bit too playfull....but..it was a pup at the end of the day so whats it supposed to behave like???? as it turns out my dog is a bit soft.......at home.....at work is a different story, hes great with our young kids (essential),not too bad with other dogs (unless they come to our house)out in the field he does what matters and im very happy......i can see lakemans concern as to "why" you would want to toughen a dog up,there are many on here who are more obsessed with thier dogs "lookin ard" than they are with thier dogs working prowess......im sure your dog will soon switch on....time and encouragement on your part are what you need to offer.....not cracking it over the head with a log to get its attention.
