out lamping lastnight Devon/Somerset borders saw various amounts of woodcock and snipe and put them up, not actual "flocks" but small groups 2's,3's,5's and a few with more,on one field scared up as many as 25-30 a mixture of woodcock/snipe in varying numbers these spread over the field... perhaps a good food source here...and no....not sandpipers etc.

You want to get out more Darcy ,snipe feed in open fields in flocks,or many individuals, sometimes along ditches too and lift as one when disturbed .Going away the snipe will jink for a few times then stright line, climbing very high very fast whereas the flight of a 'cock is hap hazard at best and just under the tree height. They usually drop in after a hunderd yards or so .Also never heard a 'cock make the tell tail snip ,snip of the

snipe .Woodcock are NOT flock feeders and will seperate if lifted together .

Therefore this makes your sighting to be snipe of the commen variety.Lesson over :boogie:

 out lamping - bang in the middle of the field usually, and very hard to rouse... you can get to within a few feet of them before they lift off.

Seen the same thing about a week back when we was out ferreting, must of been 20-30 snipe all flying around with eachother. They were darting about all over in the sky.
