ratattack 111
The place for a semi auto is on a fox drive, pigeon hide or foreshore. Not a formal driven shoot, it's easy to say i put an empty cartridge in the breech mechanism to show it's empty but thats only visible on one side and it could be forgotton about I don't like em but whatever floats your boat. dicehorn 38
Quite simply - if you are invited to shoot on a driven day and you only have a semi, then you should ask your host if it is ok and he would no doubt ask the shoot/syndicate captain for advise. 99.9% of syndicates would give the semi the thumbs down. Therefore the right thing to do is for the guy with the semi to borrow an o/u or s by s. If he takes exception to that - then probably he is not the sort of person to invite in the first place. Deker 3,478
A question sent in to sporting shooter. Q. I have a 3 shot semi-automatic gun and have been invited on a pheasant day. Can I use ir or should i use a different gun? A. Neville Grill replies. You shouldn't take a semi-automatic on a driven day for a number of reasons. The first is that most of the other guns will only have two barrels and thus two chances at a bird. You, however, would potentially have three shots, so your fellow guns might feel you should pay 50% more!. Secondly, when not on your peg its important to be able to show to guns and beaters that the gun is unloaded, which hard to achieve with a semi-auto. And, for an occasion where etiquette and tradition are important, it's simply not 'done'. What do you think about this answer? I saw this in the Magazine myself and thought what a load of uninformed Bullshit the green bits above are. The reason is 100% the red bit above, lets not start pussy footing around..that's it, but I respect that part and make no apologies for it! That's the way it is!! Quote Link to post

mad al 146
An invitation is an invitation, if a code of dress/conduct/whatever is required you abide by it or you just don't go Quote Link to post
weejohn 3
i have taken my semi-auto on an invited syndicate days and i would say my gun was the safest there as i always put it in its slip once the drive was done most if not all of the others did not. as stated above its only to do with etiquette. jackinbox99 41
I saw that same letter myself. Personally i shoot both an o/u and a semi and regardless of which im using i always have them pointing at the ground when im not shooting. So, any idiot can see that they are "safe". If someone had a problem with me using a semi then to be honest, i wouldnt want to be on that shoot. For me shooting is about enjoying yourself and having a good (safe) day out. If snobbyness or anything like that gets in the way, then id rather just go elsewhere. I apprecate some shoots might want to be old school and stick to s/s or o/u or black powder muskets or something and fair enough. Quote Link to post

Groach 7
I think that never mind the semi auto on game there are far to many charlatans out there who shoot those new fangled over and under trap guns and everyone should go back to a side by side at the very least if not a hammer gun or even a muzzle loader George Quote Link to post

charlie caller 3,654
I agree you should ask your host and abide by the rules, however semis are just as safe as any other gun, they all kill if handled carelessly, and lets not forget all single trigger sbs and o/u shotguns are all semi auto arent they?bet you lots of the big top end shoots would allow a man paying thousands a year to shoot with a semi if he needed a gun with no recoil on say health grounds, but im going to get a hammer sbs for the odd bit of driven I do as I only have a semi at the moment, and I do like the look of a sbs better on such a day,but whatever you use think safety all the time an youll be fine.
