sh 08 17
Merle is a colour, thrown by collies so if you want a rough merle best to shop around i have seen a few for sale on here and other sites. Quote Link to post
hogdog 61
Why merle? It's a genetic fault and should be avoided...It doesn't often produce problems in single dose but it can do and in double dose is very bad news. If you're looking for a worker then colour should be the last of your priorities and merle should be the last choice of colour even if it does look pretty. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merle_(coat_colour_in_dogs) Quote Link to post
Clover 0
Why merle? It's a genetic fault and should be avoided...It doesn't often produce problems in single dose but it can do and in double dose is very bad news. If you're looking for a worker then colour should be the last of your priorities and merle should be the last choice of colour even if it does look pretty. Merle is a coat pattern - not a colour - hence you can have blue merles and red merles. Why on earth should merle be avoided? There is not a problem with merle UNLESS you mate two merles together, then you run the serious risk of getting puppies that are blind, possibly with eye deformities and/or deaf. Quote Link to post

You dont nessacerial have to mate two merles together for there to be a risk of deformaties in the litter, if you mate a merle dog to a bitch that shows no merle pattern BUT CARRIES THE MERLE GENE then there is also a risk of funny things happening. Just because a collie cross doesnt shown merle colouration in its coat it doesnt mean it is devoid of the merle gene, Mate merle to pure sighthound blood and you should be sound, mate them to other collie blooded lurchers and you run a risk sometime unknown. Chaz 6
A good link dealing with double merle breeding DOUBLE MERLE And as for the original question a nice 3/4 greyhound 1/4 collie or a line bred collie lurcher should suit what you want regardless of the colour but of you want a rough you may be better looking fo somthing containing either some beardie, beddy or deerhound in it`s make up as well as border , after all colour and coat type is down to personal taste Quote Link to post

hogdog 61
Why merle? Because they look pretty? If you've got a fantastic dog that's merle then by all means breed but be aware of the potential problems. To go out and look for a merle makes no sense to me. BTW Clover I'm aware it's not a colour...you know what I meant. Sorry Jammo1, I know you didn't ask that but it's important to know. If you are going to select a dog for colour (which I wouldn't advise) then merle is probably the worst choice. Edited December 24, 2009 by hogdog Quote Link to post
