Dont do it.I have 2 bitches one is 3 years old and one 6 years old. They come in season once a year roughly and it is a bit of a pest but I would never have them speyed.I have several relitives and friends who have had it done and regret it.The vets will tell you it makes no difference but that is because they make money out of doing it.It is not only prey drive that suffers but any drive.Neutered bitches and dogs seem to lose the same interest in life that they had before.I think this is partly why they put on weight, coupled with the change in harmones as already mentioned.I think some people kid themselves that it has made no difference to the bitch. In any speyed bitches I have seen it has made a huge difference. When I compare them to my own 2 unspeyed bitches the difference realy is obvious. This is my honest opinion,Dont do it,you will spoil your bitch, atb.woodbine

I don't understand how spaying can make a bitch fat. Surely correct feeding and exercise keeps it right. My speyed bitch is lean and fit as a fiddle. :hmm:

Spaying changes the hormone levels so it can be harder to keep a speyed bitch slim, same as it's harder for a woman with kids to stay slim. That isn't an excuse though! I'm just saying that it is more difficult. It can also change their coat. Someone I know who works his rescue springers found their coats went sort of rusty coloured and more fluffy, but since swimming them in the sea every day they look better, he reckons its to do with all the female hormones washed into the sea from the pill. Could be something in that.

A surprisingly large percentage of spayed bitches suffer from incontinence, around 20%, combined with the risk from anaesthetics to lurchers has so far stopped me having my bitch done. It is a total pain in the butt though, and strangely enough dog owners blame me when their dog follows us even though it could be weeks since Fly's season finished, but have they had their dogs done? No!

I know a few folks whos speyed bitches leak a bit which would be disappointing. My own is fine, but I have no regrets about having her speyed. The thing about getting fat is the same as with humans, i reckon a lot of people are in denial about actual food intake and energy expenditure, in regards to themselves and their dogs  We have all heard them "But I hardly eat a thing!".
