Spaying a bitch wont make any difference to it at all if you keep her fit. My bitch never gained an ounce, I board hundreds every year that are the same. How many fat Greyhounds do you see? Male and female and ALL in rescue are neutered.

Just out of interest, I'm not being argumentative, I live very near a large Greyhound rescue and every other dog you see in town is a Greyhound and most of them are really fat they look awful. You see some people with three or four waddling along it's such a shame.

Too much food/ poor diet/ and or lack of exercise. "Rescued greyhounds aren't allowed off the lead you know" as a very well informed rescue org once told me :clapper:

Disgraceful, thankfully all the ones I work with and board (all rescued) are fit and in lovely nick.

dont do it they all pile the beef on at some point after it. You can get her jagged i know alot of greyhound lads who jag them so they can run them all the time although not a good idea if you intend on breeding from the bitch in future as alot of them never break down again so would probably be an idea for you.

I don't understand how spaying can make a bitch fat. Surely correct feeding and exercise keeps it right. My speyed bitch is lean and fit as a fiddle. :hmm:

Spaying changes the hormone levels so it can be harder to keep a speyed bitch slim, same as it's harder for a woman with kids to stay slim. That isn't an excuse though! I'm just saying that it is more difficult. It can also change their coat. Someone I know who works his rescue springers found their coats went sort of rusty coloured and more fluffy, but since swimming them in the sea every day they look better, he reckons its to do with all the female hormones washed into the sea from the pill. Could be something in that.

A surprisingly large percentage of spayed bitches suffer from incontinence, around 20%, combined with the risk from anaesthetics to lurchers has so far stopped me having my bitch done. It is a total pain in the butt though, and strangely enough dog owners blame me when their dog follows us even though it could be weeks since Fly's season finished, but have they had their dogs done? No!

Im really surprised by how many negative comments there have been regarding getting a bitch spayed. If i hadn't got my 3 already spayed this link would have definitely put me off having it done. I mean to what extent is it going to make a difference to a dog that has its good share of exercise....absolutely zero. At the end of the day its not just the lurcher that should have a spring in its step from all the exercise.
