boys in republic, check up north for land rovers, all landys up here have taken a dive in price, £3000 would buy you a 2001 td5 disco with 90,000miles. i'll have a check with my mates to see whats about, and report back later tonight, atb nut

10 year old disco with 90,000 miles barely ran in. £3,000 tops but it'll need to be mint body wise. Get on yer back & get underneath it. Rust kills disco's not running gear faults. Check internal front wheel arches (from under the bonnet, main chassis & floor pans, try & see as much of the bulkhead as possible and as said ealier check the boot floor (get the carpet up). Check the colour of the oil on the dipstick (although could be a touch misleading if recent oil change) Disconnect one of the hoses on the engine breather (it will be sooty but check for large lumps of oily shite) Check for leaks around the 'P' gasket (where the water pump bolts on to the engine). if you find a clean one get the underside steam washed & waxoiled then keep the salt of her.

My 1998 disco 300tdi has got 120,000 miles and goes great, starts first time every time never missis a beat. If you do end up with a disco over 100,000 miles 1/2 the service intervals I do oil & filter every 3000 miles, fuel filter, sedimentor, engine breather rocker head gasket every 6000 miles.

300tdi engine lacks punch for motorway stuff but landies shouldn't be on the motorway anyway! What sets the 300tdi apart is the ease & low cost of parts. Most reasonably practicle guy can repair most things on a 300tdi. The TD5 not so much so but the extra power in the TD5 is quite dramatic.

A cared for landy diesel engine will do 250 - 300,000 miles if you can make the chassis last that long

Remember "landies the best 4x4xfar"

Most of the above faults relate to the 300tdi. The DISCOVERY TD5 (not defender) has a couple of fairly serious issues, the biggest being warped heads (cant be skimmed, head cost £900 alone) and the other is duff injectors ( a full set new is circa £2000 !!!!). Check these and you'll only be in for minor ish faults
