Not sure why if you just wanted a fox dog, you would go for a beddy Whippet? Game or not, surely something with more power and weight behind it would be the obvious choice. I cant see how challenging a dog to have to REALLY work and probably suffer punishment when there are breeds that would fair much better, is a good plan? My beddy Whippet is scared of anything with teeth!! :clapper::clapper: Even if he wasn't i wouldn't put him on quarry that he may struggle with, i'd use a dog designed for the said quarry.

i don't have much experience of taking fox with running dogs, think I've only had about half a dozen, all taken by a straight whippet, who even at 19 1/2inches and 26 pound , must outweigh the majority of foxes( what is the average weigh of an adult fox anyway ?) and therefore had the physical advantages, even a couple of pound would make a big difference , he seemed to have a knack for pinning them with a throat hold and not getting bitten, now I'm obviously not advocating whippets or whippets crosses as regular fox dogs but they can and do take them. how big does a dog have to be to take fox regularly ?

as i said I've little experience at this, so out of curiously can i ask where the gameness comes into it with larger lurcher's taking fox, I'm 13 stone, if a battered some wee man at 8 stone who was trying to run away from me, i could hardly call myself game, its not like your fox is stopping mid course turning around shouting " fill your hands... you son of a bitch" and charging straight back into your lurcher! not knocking anyone here, just something i've wondered about.

i can see your what your saying lawrence, but fact is that a dog taking fox is always gonna run the risk of more injuries than one taking bunnies, so in my opinion it a matter of dog getting job done with minimum fuss and least chance of hurting it's self, so for that reason i prefer a bigger heavier dog that can crash into red and really knock it out asap. just my thoughts though.

it all depends on what some of you would call a fox dog? a dog that does under 10 a season is not a fox dog in my opinion as it hasnt been tested, 2-3 times a night 2-3 times a week and not jack that is what i would consider a fox dog that has been tested and knows its job well. i have no doubt that there are beddyx's out there that can take a few but a just dont think if there worked hard they would last. and to answer the first question a think if its a fox dog youre after go for a bullx or wheaton something bred for the job  youre stilol gonna get jackers but whith 2 100 percent parents youve got a much better chance atb jamie

I see your point but its not just the working parents its the bloodline behind the dog and previous (proven) litters as a good dog is not guarenteed to produce working off spring.

Also a dog taking fox around 10 a season if its single handed and never jibbs its doing all its asked of maybe they dont see 6-9 foxs a week let alone catch that many as in my eyes there the hardest quarry to catch ,my opinion only.but, 2-3 times a night 2-3 times a week, week in week outover the course of the season , thats an average of 150 foxs a season ,for one dog not many dogs would ever heal up until summer .

If a dog takes foxes single handed hes a fox dog.
