Getting my first air rifle :)

Hi everyone, For xmas my dad is getting me my first air rifle to go hunting with on small game and vermin. The air rifle itself is a Crosman Phantom 1000 and comes with a scope. Aparently its a great beginner rifle but with some power and is good for starting out hunting small game and vermin. If anyone has any tips or advice that they can give to me about going out on my first shoot i will be greatful. Also if anyone is near medway in kent and that has land that they would allow me to shoot on i would very happy to do so.

Hi there,

 

Great news that you are getting your first air rifle for Christmas. Welcome to the sport.

 

My advice to you is try and practice as much as possible on paper targets before you go out shooting live animals.

 

Even a rat deserves a quick humane death, so practice until you can hit a rats head size target at say 10 metres before you extend your range.

 

Try and get your own permission mate from someone that you and you dad knows well. Both you and your dad can enjoy that permission together.

 

Dont trust strangers on the internet friend as not everyone is who they try to make out they are. Be very careful of promisses.

Agree with all the above. Practise and practise. It takes quite a few shots to get to know your rifle. What i do is save up empty beer or coke cans and just chuck them randomly about in my garden. Then i practise hitting them. I have quite a big garden, so i can get shots from about 10 yards upto 50 yards. You soon get to learn where you have to aim to get a perfect kill. In addition to this, i get an a4 bit of paper, and draw around a 2p piece on it, loads of small targets. Then celotape this to a cardboard box and place this at different ranges in the garden. This is ideal for adjusting your scope and working out how much over and below you need to aim.

 

Once you are 100% confident in the garden target shooting, then go out shooting rabbits etc. Like someone else said, make sure you have permission where you shoot and get and adult with you. Once out in the field the most difficult thing you will find is trying to estimate distances, so try and get to know the land and pace out distances first. You want a good clean kill, and you have to be prepared to kill by hand if you havent killed cleanly with your shot. The first time you do this, it isnt nice, but you get used to it.
