DUCKWING 302
I WILL GIVE YOU ONE THING YER PERSISTANT OK KIDDER ......... RUN THE SENARIO THROUGH YER MIND ,....... HEDGES ABOUT NOVEMBER THAT HAVE BEEN KNOCKED BACK WITH THE HEDGE THRASHER ..... MAN MADE FIBRE OR HEMP AS STOPS ? OLD GROWTH WOODLAND ...... LOADS OF FALLEN TWIGS , ASH / OAK ETC LITTERING THE FLOOR ...... MAN MADE OR HEMP AS SHORT STOP NETS ? HOW ABOUT WHINS AFTER TRIMMING OUT ON OPEN FELL YOU WANT TO DISECT THE WARREN TO MANAGEABLE PLOTS AND STOP RABBITS RUNNING THE LENGTH OF THE WARREN SIMPLY TO DROP IN ELSEWHERE AND BE A BUGGER TO BOLT ...... MAN MADE OR HEMP ????? OR A SQUARE MESHED NET FOR RUN THROUGHS WHILST GATE NETTING ..... A MAN NORMALLY CARRIES TWO GATE NETS AND THREE OR FOUR NETS FOR BREAKS IN THE HEDGE OR WALLS ETC , ...... MAN MADE OR HEMP ? NOW THEN IN ALL THE SITUATIONS ABOVE... ALL..... REQUIRE A NET THAT CAN UNTANGLED QUICKLY , AND CAN BE CARRIED ON IN USE ....... higgins 75
I remember using some type of hemp years ago for net making, irish linen i think it was called,it was treated with an oily linseed preservative, seem to be weather resistant, don't see much of this now, Higgins. FAR SUPERIOR TO HEMP ESPECIALLY THE WAXED TYPE YOU PROBABLY USED..' made some excellent long nets, gate nets and purse nets till we run out of the stuff, the mill we got it from closed down and i've never been able to get it since. You could see the oil come out in the knots as you tightened them,if you didn't lock the knot properly it would move so double knotting had to be used occasionally to ensure they were tight, atb, Higgins. Teesdale-rabbiter 15
I can see your point duckwing, hemp still dose have its places in the hedge rows but I'm a polly man for everything else i like my polyester for most things but I still use good quality 5 ply hemp that seams to be getting harder to get hold of but I hate working with nylon but at the end of the days its each to there own. Hob&Jill 258
Old trap collector sent me a double knitted irish linen stop net free of charge about a year back, top bloke. It will be tresured for many years to come. It is a brilliant net, lovely to use. Why dosent irish linen seem to be used much nowadays? or is it? atb HJ

desertdog 149
and it seems to be hard to get, have,nt had any in an age, ive gone back to me hemp nets, id did have a load of poly stuff, but every time i took them out they ended up in someone elses bag, and getting mixed up, so every one now knows i have hemp, its good gear and if you have pride in what you do you dont mind haning them up after use, i like using it,it dont stretch and the knots dont slip,, give me hemp any day. cúagusgiorraí 57
thanks for sharing all the advice lads. I must say, I am only new to this craic, but already love the way hemp works, lays, and handles. Like anything, it's good to care for your tools. Irish linen sounds interesting. I will look into that, thanks Higgins & Duckwing.
