FightTheBan 1,147
Dont normally post my outings on here, but ive got time to kill so here goes. Took today day off work to go and rattle some holes with the teriers as snow was forecast. Forecast wasnt wrong, got up at 7 to a good flurry and a couple of inches on the deck, nice. Got to the first place at 8, just getting light, nice big rock earth that usually holds and guaranteed to bolt if you stay quiet enough. Got there to find a set of prints going in and a set coming out . Place was stinking of charlie but no one was home, russell was keen on the fresh scent and ran the earth for a couple of minutes. Got to the second farm, over a couple of fields there is a big hollow in the ground, across a river where there are three earths, one of the three usually always holds(one of them is an old lime kiln where i had a disasterous dig a few weeks back when my old mk1 knocker box packed in, glad to say ive got a barryvox pulse kit on order). The holes were all open and fresh prints were everywhere but again, no one home. The russell started following a line and quicker than i could catch up with him he was back over the river and heading to a small scrap heap the farmer tips his tin sheets and rubbish in. Wee russel flies to ground and after a bit of banging and comotion, a nice big dog fox bolts and i bowled him over with the second shot . I wasnt quite ready for the first. Tried a good few more holes to no avail, by this time it was about 12, so i decided to put the russell away and get my lakie out (i was only out myself and its a nitemare to carry a gun, spade, nets and two nutjob terriers). Got to the second last place and after the long walk up the hill, i came to a very big earth that i only found last week (must be over 25 holes), it's in a large gorse patch so its a bit of a pain to do, and as i was on my own, the whole earth cannot be seen so i had to follow the dog with the box. After about 5 minutes in, it was clear the lakie was working fox. He hadnt connected yet, but by the was he was rumbling about he was trying to find. The dog started baying after about 15-20 minutes in so it was clear he had met his quarry. I got a mark on him of 4 ft and decided to let him settle on it. Kept trying for a mark, but time and time again, the fox would move, only a few feet but enough to make sinking a hole pointless. The dog was to ground for well over an hour before i got a steady mark at 3.5 ft on my deben box (its and mk3 ferret finder that i rape tape a ferret coller to a leather dog collar, rough as i know, but needs must. lol). I broke through shortly after (easy dig but the first few inches were frozen solid like concrete), the wee lakie was locked on jaw to jaw, and the fox was humanely dispached to avoid further injury. When i drew the fox out, the point of breaking through was like an undergroung maze, tunnels going 5 ways, no wonder the dog was failing to find a stop end. I decided to call it a day after backfilling the job, as sumo the lakie had done his bit and was a bit sore. Very impressed with him holding his game long enough for a dig, in a very well established earth when the odds were against him, considering this was only his 5th fox. All in all a very enjoyable day, perfect weather and good to get out with this years fresh starters (they are both under 2 year old, so really this is there first season). Dont like posting picks of my dogs or quarry, so apologies for the lack of visuals. Quote Link to post

FightTheBan 1,147
''good read.do always go out on your own?'' Naw mate, but my wee brother, who i usually go out with, is a keeper and he was out digging today himself so couldnt make it, and my other pal was away christmas shopping ! I usually bring one buddy with me, dont like turning up on permission with loads of folk. It was too good an opportunity to let it pass, and im getting impatient waiting for the new locator. Bryan off the site has been a great help and is getting one brought in from america as he has ran out of stock. Quote Link to post

FightTheBan 1,147
''Fair play to you for taking on the big place on your own, gorse is a b*****d to get amongst'' Aye, a few heart in mouth moments when the dog went off the box i thought id bit off more than i could chew Thankfully the fox didnt bolt as i wouldnt have a hope in hells chance ofhitting it in the thick of it. Forgot to add to my post, the terrier work was carried out on shooting estates for gamebird protection. Quote Link to post
