Best pellets for SMK XS79

Recommended Posts

I wonder if anyone can give me a nod in the right direction, I have just bought an SMK XS79 (mixed reactions to that I bet!). Anyway I want to buy two types of pellet, one for short range vermin work ie: Rats and Pigeons and one for longer range hunting ie: Rabbits and pheasants. Can anyone advise me, I have been told that Bisley magnums would get the best out of the limited power of the XS79 for longer range but I have no sure what to go for when shooting vermin and shorter ranges.

Regards, PCplod

gunsmilie.gifAir Arms Field Diablo's are a very very good all rounder

Great for bunnies and rats. I put one through the back of a mouse at 30 feet (10 yards approx) and it looked like the mouse had a breezeblock pushed through it. Instant death. gunsmilie.gif oh and that was with an SMK (19 not the qb).

:stupid: you cant go wrong really except the odd tin of deformed skirts but there a good start if you need more down range performance try bisley long range gold ;)

Thank you Phantom, Thank you Wuzzy, both really helpful and backs up some of my online research.

I have only just joined your group and have had great advice, glad I joined. :boogie:

With a name like that , you`re not going to be popular

Why would a user name on a forum make me un-popular? unless there is something about the meaning of PCplod that makes you uneasy :hmm: .

To clear the air about my user name for any nervous people out there  , my initials are PC because of this the kids at school called me PCplod for a bit of fun! I am not a policeman, I fit Neon signs. There there c side nothing to worry about mate

you still not took davey's advice  ignore some of the trolls on here pcplod

Hi Wuzzy, not sure who Davey is and what the advice was I'm abit old in the tooth and the-ole memory plays me up! :icon_redface:, but thanks for the advice on the Trolls as you call them. I've been out with the smk xs79 today and found it to be lacking in real power, not that pleased with it, I wonder if it can be tuned-up without to much cost? :hmm:

its the temprature fella the co2 compresses with the cold but expands with heat so in winter its the worst rifle you could use no amount of tuning would make it usable in the cold i,m afarid, you might be better off looking at a cheap springer for winter shooting a smk xs19 in .177 ia an awsome rifle for the money and with a decent scope will do the bizz :clapper:

And just what is wrong with the XS19 in .22?

Aint sod all wrong with it in .22 I highly recomend it in .22 but then I may be a little biased seeing as mine is a .22 cal bunny killing machine (and the odd mouse chucked in for good measure) :tongue2:

PCPlod, when Joey (Wuzzy) said about not taking Davy's advice he wasn't talking to you buddy, he was talking to a particular troll  that Davy told to take a long walk off a short pier (in a round about way, that we'll not go into again).

Yea, I know what you mean Wuzzy, but I was in an old shed complete with wood burning stove which I fired up and I was shooting from a small side window, the gun was quite warm to the touch (I really get that stove going mate :D ). I don't have any means of testing power but I sighted the 79, target on wooden plank at approx 20yds, the pellets bounced of with very little penetration and very lttle pellet distortion :( . I know at that range my old Meteor would have very likely passed through the plank or at least been lost deep within the wood, do you know what the average ft/lb of the xs79 should be mate? :hmm:

again thats all dependant on alot of different conditions but it should! be about 10-10.5 at the least but there are tuning guides on the web on how to fine tune them as they are a bit rough out of the box, if you look up charlie da tuner on google same spelling you should find his how-to i followed it with my 78 but i over polished some of the parts and had massive c02 loss form shot to shot so be careful  and phantom i can only speak for the xs19 in .177 as thats the only one ive used and seen in action :tongue2:

Hi Phantom,

Thanks for clearing that up for me, I really must get the hang of this! . I am reading what you and Wuzzy are saying and taking it all in, I have a feeling that I may live to regret buying the xs79 but we shall have to wait and see, at the moment because of a fight with the dreaded big C I can't throw any more money at the sport :( , I will have to bide my time, but this will give me a lot of time to research and narrow things down, you chaps out there are good source of imformation, very helpful

I am sure that my 79 is not spitting 10-10.5 because I don't think my old Meteor spat more than about 9ft/lb and it would have knocked the spots off of this xs79, thanks for the advice Wuzzy, I will check out charlie da tuner, cheers mate
