dama 0
Learnt a lesson the other morning. Was in a high seat on a foggy morning overlooking a field of young growth winter wheat. The pressure was on, this was the only oppurtunity I had to get out of work and I was desperate for a carcase to fill christmas demands. I had seen deer milling around on the far edge of the field but really obscurred by the mist. They were not venturing any closer so when a gap in the mist arose I took a shot that I never should have. 240 Metres at a doe at the farthest corner of the field. I heard the impact but she fled into the wood. I left her for 20 minutes then followed up. Found a good blood trail and tracked this into the wood for some 100mtrs or so then it started to wain and after another 70 mtres each drop was now several meters apart and finally disapeared. No dog and 3 hours later I found her but her some 500 metres away. I had methodically worked the wood in ever larger circles following up any disturbance in the leaves that created a track. To say I was pleased to find her was one thing. I know that a lesson should be learnt here- don't shoot beyond your own known capabilities! I was lucky to find her at all and she could have have had a long slow death if the shot had not caused enough bleeding. The shot hat hit her high at the back of the ribs and although there was no nasty stomach damage there was also no damage to any of the vital organs. Yeah - I don't need any lectures, I just feel it's good to share our mistakes so that we can all learn from them Quote Link to post
