Another outing today

Recommended Posts

Called in to see a farmer yesterday on the way home and asked about the deer situation.Loads about so today i tried the place and he wasnt wrong .Walked up a long trck and into his top fields where they are usually to be found .Through the last gateway on the lane ,i could see and pair of does ,mature and a follower .Only about 50 yards off so on sticks a bit sharpish and dropped the old girl .The follower ran into the field a bit and looked back like they do and she joined the other in the bag .Onwards and started seeing more and more deer.

The second pair to end up in the bag were sat down as i glassed them in the next field undisturbed by the previous shooting ,the joys of a moderator i suppose .Had to back track to a gap in the hedge to arrive at a shootable position where i killed both off the bipod at a good 100 plus .Left them for collection and moved on .Two more fields over i spotted another pair ,a doe and follower again like the previous pairs .A tricky stalk on open ground got me to within approx' 100 yards and again off the bipod i shot the youngster first as she was standing .The doe sprang to her feet and i hurried a shot ,too hurried as it turned out and saw the doe run off shot low in the brisket.Times like these call for a cool head and i waited a good five minutes before following on .No blood trail, only the odd pins to lead the way .By glassing the hedgerows i saw her lead down and panting .An aproach now would have her up and running and as she was in full veiw of me i decided to backtrack and get the dog .Drove the 4 miles home ,picked up the lurcher and headed back .Drove to the nearest field and walked in with lurcher on slip and rifle at the ready .She wasnt where i left her so i cast the dog about round the area and bingo she found it ,there tucked in the hedge was the deer ,alive but fading .The lurcher would off done the job but i finished her with a shot to the head at point blank .Without the dog i would of struggled i fear as the ditches are deep and overgrown but alls well that ends well i suppose .Smashed front leg and no exit wound ! Finished with 6 roe to add to the 4 up the yard .Happy days :victory:
