Recent stalking outings

Last Sunday afternoon ,i got to sit in a high seat by kind invitation from a chap i hardly know .He rents some stalking in a wood near me and i chanced upon him on the quad a while back ,got talking and true to his word the invite came Sunday morning .By 2pm i was in the seat he had chosen for me ,a 't'junction of two rides with a very good veiw up and to both sides .He went and sat on a bank overlooking a clear fell area but despite seeing deer he blanked .I on the other hand got lucky and grassed this doe which lingered too long crossing a ride .Darkness came early in the wood so time to leave .

 

Monday saw me in Bedfordshire on the chinky fellas .Not stalking really as we drove around on the quad thinning out a few in a ever growing population .Managed six with 5 head shots and a body shot on a buck as he was a tusker and i dont have a trophy on the wall until now .A good buck with 21/2 inch tusks .

Three i was able to bring home .

Today back on the roe on my ground .Martin came up for the morning but due to the frost overnight hanging about ,there wasnt much movement and he blanked for a change In the afternoon i tried a new spot i have and managed these four.In the last field of theirs there were 7 roe sat in the sun.The landowner advised me that the hunt was local and as i walked up the first field i could hear hounds somewhere to the right but not in view .My approach had to be very slow and low as you can imagine but fate was to deal them a bad hand in the shape of the local hunt who came galloping across the field above the roe ,hounds in full cry ,causing them to jump to thier feet and stare over the hedge .Hounds followed by two red jackets followed by the field master .This allowed a bit of time to shimey into position by a pond and line up a shot off bipod.Dropped 3 before they started milling about,unaware where the shots were coming from and blaming the hunt no doubt , and a fourth as it tried to jump a fence but failed .The others broke formation and ran down the hedge to my right and over a hunt jump .

I was right by a pond for the shot where on my approach between 20-30 mallard got up .Future sport there i think .Walked back to the farm for the truck and then struggled to load them all up .Hard life isnt it .

The pic below is the spot in front the pond where i shot from .You can just make out the carcasses under the ivy tree in the corner of the far hedge line .

If i didn't know better drooper i`d swear that the last picture was taken on my favorite bit of ground. Like you the guy`s were out yesterday local to me on the quad controlling Deer i think the correct term used by the "Pro`s" is Removing

Anyway as i watched this guy take out two mature Hinds off a bipod whilst still seated on the quad i felt a tinge of jealousy which is unlike me,lol.

But yes its a hard life Drooper....

That pic is very typical of Wiltshire mate .Very flat ,small fields and overgrown hedges ,perfect roe habitat .

p.s. I might just add that i had to rush off early in the morning to take my aged mum shopping,but,I did manage an hour later in the evening,and,just as the light was dwindling a young Roe Doe strolled out of a hedgeline just in time to meet my 100 grainer,so,not a total blank for the day..........
